Hit the right note with Keswick's jazz festival fun!

Strike up the band! The ever-popular Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival is about to get under way and I can’t wait! It’s such a brilliant atmosphere and the town really comes alive with the sound of music.

Many of the festival-goers book into our self-catering cottages year after year and are becoming old friends, and it’s always lovely to welcome them back!

jazz festival performance at Theatre by the Lake

This year is the 27th celebration of some of the best New Orleans, swing, hot club, classic, traditional and mainstream jazz and blues. The programme runs from Thursday 10 May to Sunday 13 May at a number of venues in Keswick, and some single-day and multi-day passes are still available, although four-day and Sunday-only strollers have all sold out. Well, I did say it’s popular!

If you don’t have tickets, you can still get into the swing of things thanks to the free and open-air events in the town, starting at 10am on Thursday when Live Jazz and Dance in the Market marks the official opening.

Jazz festival parade at Derwentwater

Undoubtedly one of the highlights is the free Grand Festival Parade on Saturday morning, when a sea of bright and decorated umbrellas led by a band of festival musicians heads through the town centre in a New Orleans-style spectacle that’s not to be missed! The parade leaves Market Square at 10am and finishes at Derwentwater shore, and anyone can join in at any point. Go on, grab an umbrella and get ready to dance your way around town!

This year, even Keswick Brewery is getting into the spirit by creating a limited edition beer called Jazz Session and donating 10p per bottle to support the festival – an ale that definitely hits the right note! It’s available to try this week at many pubs and bars in town, as well as from the brewery itself.

Check out the Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival website for details of the full festival schedule, ticket availability and participating venues.
