Half Term Activities in the Lake District

Published:

With 4 weeks to go until the October half term, bookings have been very busy but don’t panic, there is still time to find the perfect cottage for you and your family. What you can’t guarantee though is the Lake District weather! It can be tricky keeping kids entertained when the weather is bad and dragging them up a rain lashed mountain is not going to endear them to the great outdoors! There are several fantastic climbing walls within easy reach of virtually all our Lake District cottages, presenting the perfect solution to rainy day blues whatever the age and ability of your family.

Ambleside
The climbing wall run by Adventure Peaks has to be near the top of the list for any visit to the Lake District. Café Altitude is situated above the Adventure Peaks outdoor shop and the full length windows mean you can watch the climbers whilst you enjoy a drink and something to eat from the excellent menu. There are excellent views in the other direction too, over the roof tops of Ambleside towards the Fairfield Horseshoe and Loughrigg Fell. The bouldering here is especially popular and a great way to get kids started.

Castlerigg Stone Circle near KeswickKeswick
Keswick’s climbing wall is in a beautiful location on the outskirts of Keswick. 40 top rope climbs are on offer as well as a dedicated bouldering room, picnic benches and refreshments. The centre also offers outdoor climbing and a number of other activities. A few minutes walk from the climbing centre is Castlerigg Stone Circle, which is stunning in any weather. There is usually an ice cream van stationed here too!

Kendal
Kendal is the tallest wall in the country at an enormous 25 metres. The walls offer over 200 routes. It caters for families with and without climbing experience and offers a tuition session before letting you lose on the wall. Taster sessions operate during the school holidays and if you have a large family or are holidaying with friends then a group of 9 can have a private tuition session.

Carlisle
Coming soon to Carlisle is Eden Rock! The owners hope that it will be ready for October half term and the initial photos are looking good – an enormous warehouse with huge bouldering circuit walls, big walls and a kids room. Check out Eden Rock on Facebook for more details on their opening date.
