Everyone went pancake mad yesterday, the one day of the year where eating pancakes is practically enforced. I love pancakes all year round, particularly the yummy ones I had on Monday at local Keswick café, The Filling Station.
As the name suggests, the Filling Station Café is a former garage, situated on the Crosthwaite Road on the outskirts of Keswick near several of our self catering cottages. The café is a retro American style diner with brightly coloured booths inside to sit on and walls covered in nostalgic posters. Taking centre stage in the display is an actual vintage Royal Norton motorbike! Look closely, you can see your reflection in the polished chrome.
You can enjoy a tray bake or cake from the display cabinet on the counter, or sit down and scratch your head over the menu that has some American inspired options including American style burgers and stacks of amazing pancakes.
My dad settled on the eggs benedict (two poached eggs, toasted muffins, mushrooms, spinach and bacon all topped with hollandaise sauce) and I went for a pancake stack – buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. Fabulous! Add to that two mammoth pint mugs of tea and you have two very happy customers.
The Filling Station is handily located for grabbing a bite to eat once you have finished off a walk along the old railway line, over Latrigg or a big Skiddaw walk. The café is dog friendly too.
