Another brand new Area Guide is hot off the press! This time we bring you Threlkeld & St John’s in the Vale, packed full of great walks, things to see and do, and places to eat.
When we first discussed our new website, I volunteered to bring our area guides up to date, thinking that a simple re-write was all that was needed. Ah hindsight! The task seems to have grown and grown, requiring plenty of research. It has been thoroughly enjoyable though! My list of places to visit has got longer, and I feel like I know a whole lot more about the beautiful Lake District.
The main reason for writing these area guides is to give you a flavour of the locations of our self catering lake district cottages and help you decide where you might like to visit. Here at Sally’s Cottages we are all passionate about the Lake District and we like to let you in on some of our secrets such as great places to eat and lovely walks.
Threlkeld is a small village with a magnificent mountain backdrop. It is slightly elevated, giving a view to Clough Head and High Rigg, whilst Blencathra dominates the view north. Walkers and mountain bikers are well catered for with countless routes for all abilities to enjoy.
St John’s in the Vale is one of those beautiful little valleys that has not changed in years. Spring water from High Rigg feed the scattered properties through the valley and the beck gently makes its way through along the valley floor. All in all, it is a very peaceful place to be. The Helvellyn range is a huge presence along one side of the valley, whilst diminutive little High Rigg stands its ground to the west.
Threlkeld and St John’s are very pet friendly. Lake District pubs and cafes in the area all welcome dogs including The Sally (no relation!), the Horse and Farrier and Low Bridge End Tea Room.
