Property code: OC-SZ205

Relax in this charming stone-built gem in the tiny Western Lake District hamlet of Santon. This cosy traditional end of terrace house sleeps up to four people in two lovely rooms and boasts glorious views across rolling countryside to the mighty fells of the Wasdale Valley. What's more, it is just a short potter down the road to a much-loved local pub. Its owners have made the most of space and period features to give it a warm and welcoming feel while using modern design touches and light to great use. It also has an enclosed garden to the rear

Santon is nestled at the gateway to the wonderful Wasdale Valley. More remote than the tourist hubs of the Lake District Wasdale offers stunning scenery, real tranquillity and a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities. It is home to England's highest peak, deepest lake, smallest church and, just a stroll down the road from the cottage, the pub that holds The World's Biggest Liar Competition (not to be missed if you are visiting while its being held). The crystal-clear River Irt flows from Wastwater through Santon on to the coast at Ravenglass and offers plenty of places for a paddle and a stone skim for visitors. As well as the local pub there is also a delightful tearoom just up the road where you can treat yourselves to a gorgeous afternoon tea following your adventures.

Only slightly further afield there's plenty more to explore with the award-winning Muncaster Castle and Gardens just a short drive away and the wonderful La'al Ratty narrow gauge steam railway running from Ravenglass on the coast to the neighbouring valley of Eskdale too. An absolute must for railway children of all ages. There's Roman history to be explored and great local food and beers to be sampled all on the doorstep of this unassuming little hamlet.

Guests enter to the rear of the house into a handy utility room. There's plenty of space here to leave your coats and muddy walking boots following your Lakeland travels. There's also cupboard space and a fridge/freezer in here. Moving on through the door into the delightful kitchen/diner where the owners have retained period features and used the space to great effect. The kitchen area itself has five gas hobs and a fan oven ingeniously built in to the old sandstone hearth while there is also a microwave and plenty of cupboard storage. The limited floor space has been well used by creating a built-in dining table. The former bread oven has been opened up to make a delightful design feature too.

The homely living room has a Smart TV,  two sofas and two armchairs arranged around a wood burner, perfect for snuggling up on chilly evenings. The decor is light and fresh with a stone tiled floor, cosy rug, exposed beams and built-in wall cupboards. Keeping the traditional theme there's a ceiling mounted clothes airer above the hearth too.

The main staircase ascends from the kitchen taking you to the light landing and the main bedrooms. Firstly to the master bedroom, this has a bright airy feel with light walls, stripped floorboards, bold coloured soft furnishings and a charming decorative fireplace. The king-size bed has a romantic looking metal bedframe while there is a dresser with deep drawers for storage. Moving on to the second bedroom which has the glorious view to the back of the house of the mighty Wasdale fells in the distance. Tearing yourself away from the window you'll find this room has a double metal bedstead, a slimline wardrobe and a dresser. From the landing there's a step down into the bathroom which has a shower over the bath and an adorable picture window with that wonderful far-reaching view.

Moving across the lane at the back of the row of cottages is a lovely enclosed garden with a lawn and a dining bench for outdoor meals. Why not enjoy a glass of wine while soaking up the peace, tranquillity and wonderful views?

A lovely cottage with easy access to western peaks as it's a short drive from wasdale. Also close to the beach at Drigg which our dog loves for a good run. The cottage is warm with really responsive central heating when you need it and crucially plenty hot water for a bath after a days walking. Beds are comfy, kitchen has what you need and the TV iRead mores the easiest I've ever dealt with in a self catering house! Wed definitely return Hide

We had a really lovely stay in Gable Cottage. Great base for exploring Wasdale etc. Comfortable beds, clean and tidy. Garden was great for the dog - it's not connected to the house -you have to cross the path and go in through the gate. There would be stunning views from the garden if the back hedge was trimmed down a bit. If walking directly from Read morethe cottage, you have to walk on the road before reaching footpaths, but beaches are close by and fabulous. 100% recommended - thank you! Hide
