Sleeping four guests, the property is perfect for couples and small families seeking a relaxing break in breathtaking surroundings. Keen walkers will be in their element, with a wide choice of nearby routes including dramatic fell climbs in the Helvellyn range (15 miles).

The gorgeous period property is set in a village that’s designated a conservation area and was designed by the renowned Georgian architect Robert Adam. The cosy lounge is the ideal place to unwind at the end of the day, with plush seating and a roaring wood burner to warm your toes in winter months. Also on the ground floor is a stylish kitchen/diner, with everything needed for a self-catering break and a dining table to seat all four guests. One is a super-king zip-and-link room which can be made into a twin on request when you make your booking, and the other is a zip-and-link twin bedroom that can be made into a super-king on request. A chic family bathroom completes the accommodation. Outside, sip a morning coffee in the enclosed courtyard, whilst planning the day’s itinerary.

Journey to Pooley Bridge (5.5 miles), at Ullswater’s northern tip, where you can join the circular Ullswater Way to explore on foot, or board one of the iconic steamers to get out on the water. If you’re seeking an exhilarating hike with panoramic views, why not take on the mighty Helvellyn, the third-highest peak in England? The fell sits at the southern end of Ullswater, offering stunning views across the water and the wider Lake District. At the end of the day, head into the market town of Penrith, 5 miles away, where you’ll find a good range of independent restaurants and pubs serving delicious local produce.

We left a day early as there were workmen in the back doing some kind of renovation, they blocked the exit to get to our car which was in its designated parking spot behind the property. Also there was music, drilling and hammering. Clanging noises from the scaffolding. No warning of this work being done and we had no other option than to leave on Read moreThursday instead of Friday. I think we should be compensated for the last day. I will never book this property again Hide

Pleasant estate cottage in good location close to Lowther Castle and not far from Askham village in a quiet location away from the crowds. Excellent cycle hire at the castle with all types of bikes and trailers, way marked trails on the estate. Points of note, the second bedroom is poorly ventilated and not pleasant in warm weather, not really possRead moreible to shower as there is a low beam over the bathtub. This was a last minute for booking for us so would not have been our first choice. Hide

The cottage is in a beautiful setting with easy access to Penrith and the surrounding countryside. The house was clean and tidy and there was wine and chocolates which was a lovely touch. The beds were really comfortable and there is good storage space for clothes in the bedrooms which is sometimes overlooked in holiday cottages. We were lucky to bRead moree staying in the summer with glorious weather but it meant that the bedrooms were very hot as they have small windows. It is a lovely house though. Hide
