We loved our stay at Winder Barn. The barn was very warm, comfortable & clean. It was in a beautiful location at the end of a long track at the top of a hillside with great walks from the door & well placed to get to lovely places. The friendly owners Dave & Sue were nearby and work very hard to keep a good standard in their cottages and surrounding grounds. We would love to go back sometime. Sally’s cottages

Hello Jayne, I love getting feedback like this - thank you so much! It's a gem of a cottage, isn't it? You couldn't have picked a better location for exploring the beautiful Lakes and getting out and about on some great walks. The owners' are fabulous and always endeavour to ensure guests have a truly memorable experience. I'm thrilled you had a great time and I hope you will come back and visit us very soon!

Our party of three couples, two small dogs and a toddler were very happy with our stay at Winder Barn. As a converted B&B with locked doors attaching it to the main house it was perfect for groups, each room being en suite, and with a downstairs area for cooking, dining and relaxing with gas fire, comfortable sofas and a TV and bookcase.
The (albeit small) kitchen was very well equipped (think potato masher, weighing scale, gravy jug - the lot) and little Lizzy was looked after with a cot and high chair provided. Beds were comfortable, water pressure in the shower was great and the furnishings were generally of a decent quality. You must supply your own towels.
There are four cottages in total on the plot, along with Sue and Dave's own house but it is a peaceful and beautiful location and we saw and heard very little of the other guests. The surroundings are beautiful but expect to be out in the countryside here. It is a few minutes drive to the nearest town. We'd recommend taking a 5-10 minute walk over the field to get a fantastic view of Ullswater Lake (best enjoyed at sunset and with a glass of wine in tow!) Over a weekend we visited Aira Force waterfall and took the steamers around Ullswater but there is plenty more to do in this Northern Lakes region and we plan to return one day.
The owners were very friendly and passionate about their new project, along with their growing menagerie of donkeys, dogs and locally bred sheep. Dave was always on hand to help with any queries such as how to work the oven, or to lend a cup of flour which we were very grateful for mid-recipe. Due to the surrounding pasture fields and the rare red squirrels on site, there is a strict rule that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, though there is a small field for them to have a run and do their business. They are not permitted on furniture indoors. There is also a doggy shower area for muddy days.
All in all we had a lovely trip and would recommend Winder Barn or one of the other smaller cottages for a stay if you want to experience the quieter Northern Lakes.
