- Wilkinsyke Farm Cottage is a cosy cottage in the most beautiful location in the heart of Buttermere.
The living room is snug and cosy with two very comfy reclining leather sofas. The Freesat TV got quite a lot of channels. The window looks onto the garden and up onto the fells.
Well equipped kitchen including a freezer and microwave. Plenty of cupboard space with a table and chairs. There is an iron and ironing board. There are lovely views from the kitchen and landing window across to Sour Milk Gill and the Buttermere Fells
The loo is separate to the bathroom which is handy. Good size bathroom with bathtub and shower. The immersion heater is effective and an hour gives you plenty of hot water for a deep bath. The shower works fine and is hot but the shower curtain rail is a bit precarious!!
Upstairs is a huge airy bright comfortable bedroom with two windows looking onto Snockrigg Fell, and the reading room which could easily be a second bedroom.
I found the bed to be really comfortable, with a fluffy duvet and plump pillows.
I didn't need any heating as it was a warm week but the storage heater in the hall gives out a lot of warmth I aired my damp clothes there. There are radiators in the bedroom and kitchen a bathroom heater and a log burner in the living room so, together with the thick walls, I expect it would be quite warm in winter.
The location is superb, Buttermere is gorgeous, there are amazing walks from the door.. the footpath to the Lakeshore is right by the door. There is easy access to Borrowdale, Honister Pass and the Newlands Valley. Crummock Water and Loweswater are nearby.
There are two cafes and two pubs within a couple of minutes walk. A regular bus service runs to Keswick from the Bridge Inn.
There is a sweet little garden opposite with picnic bench, lovely to sit in and watch or chat to people on their rambles.
Jane and Alan are very friendly and available next door for any help if needed ...but they also gave me complete privacy.
Two easy improvements would be a dish draining rack and an extension lead for one of the bedside lamps as it was a bit of a stretch to the plug.
Be aware that there is very patchy mobile signal in Buttermere and WiFi is hard to come by. I found a phone signal by walking part the way up High Snockrigg! None of the payphones in the village seemed to be working while I was there. WiFi would be a useful addition to the cottage divinities.
Bear in mind that, as this is an old traditional farm cottage on a working farm, you may get the odd spider coming in or a wee bit of flaky paint in places. That is the nature of such buildings and all adds to their character.
I really loved my week at Wilkinsyke Farm Cottage, it is a very homely, comfortable place to stay. It was so peaceful but at the same time not too isolated.

Hi Joanna, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. I'm so pleased you had a wonderful week, and it sounds like you were lucky with the weather too. It's a lovely place for a relaxing break isn't it, the views are incredible in every direction! I hope you enjoyed some lovely walks, the circular walk around Buttermere is one of my favourite low level walks in the whole of the Lake District.
I really appreciate your feedback and suggestions for improvement, thank you.
I hope you can come back to explore more of the Lakes soon.
