This bolthole exudes charm and character and is a cosy home to return to after days exploring the Lake District and the coast. Continue your day in the great outdoors and dine alfresco in the garden.

This property is a cosy and comfortable cottage with a remarkable Grade II-listed interior with dark wooden beams, wonky walls and an original cast iron fireplace at its heart. There is a lovely enclosed garden (perfect for children) with stunning views of the Lakeland Fells.

The holiday home is an ideal retreat for walkers and visitors looking to get away from it all; there are hundreds of walks right from the door of the cottage, either up onto the highest fells in the Lake District or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass.

The famous Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Railway is ten minutes walk from the cottage and its steam trains make their way leisurely from Boot along the valley on their 7-mile journey down to the sea.

There are five pubs in the valley, both welcome children and serve real ales and a wide choice of good food.

Eskdale village shop, Eskdale Stores, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. The Post Office at Boot also sells a variety of goods including home-made sandwiches.

Tucked away in the Eskdale Valley, this lovely holiday property is a great base to explore the quieter side of the Lake District. The cottage is located in Boot but is set back from the street through a gateway and is private and not overlooked but still with the advantage of being just a few minutes walk from the pub - a great place to sample some of excellent lakeland ales and fantastic food.

The sitting room is warm and comfortable with an open fire and reading material provided, along with radio and CD player. There is a TV with freesat and DVD player. There is also dining for six here.

From the sitting room is the kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. There is also a dining table for four here.

The kitchen leads to the bathroom which has a bath with handheld shower, toilet and sink. There is a washer dryer in the large bathroom utility cupboard.

The stairs lead from the sitting room to three bedrooms upstairs. There is a king-size bedroom with en-suite shower room (shower cubicle, WC and basin), a double bedroom and a twin bedroom.

Outside there is a lovely enclosed garden, with a patio and garden table and chairs, which has outstanding views of the surrounding Eskdale fells.

  • 3 bedrooms – 1 king-size, 1 double, 1 twin
  • 2 bathrooms – 1 bathroom with a bath with shower attachment and WC, 1 en-suite shower room (1mx1m) and WC

Great cottage in the middle of some amazing countryside. Great walks right from the doorstep. The cottage has very low ceilings and doorways so if you are even slightly tall you are likely to hit your head! The driveway is a bit uneven and bumpy, specially as you have to park to one side and leave enough room for farm vehicles to pass. This cottage is gorgeous and in a really beautiful place, right by a beck and handy for the local inns, fantastic walks in the dale, by the river Esk, on the fells and up the mountains. Whillanside is well equipped and comfortable, with beautiful views and a perfect spot for a relaxing holiday.

Whillanside was perfect in every way. Very cosy, comfortable and homely, and with some amazing walking from the door. It had everything you could possibly need and more (might be worth taking some salt and pepper if you are planning to cook - the only thing we were short of), including a good supply of coal and wood for the fire. Lovely little cottage, full of character, ideally situated in Boot opposite a great pub. Perfect for going on the La'al Ratty railway, climbing Scarfell Pike and visiting sites. At the end of the road so nice and quiet, parking was fine and the cottage had everything we needed. Will recommend!

A lovely cottage full of character in a great location literally yards from 2 pubs and with Lake District pastures and hills to look at while relaxing in its garden. Because of its age and construction it is a bit dark and the rooms are small however it is cosy, well thought out and well laid out and well equipped.

We had a very enjoyable stay at Whillanside and appreciated the character of the property. We weren't so keen on the bath being downstairs, through the kitchen, but can understand why it is located there and the ensuite in master bedroom made up for it. A lovely garden and well equipped, well appointed kitchen were also appreciated. We hope to visiRead moret again. . Hide

This is a genuinely characterful cottage in a magnificent location. We loved the cosy sitting room, especially its open fire. The views from our upstairs room were uplifting. We enjoyed the morning and evening soundtrack from the peaceful garden. Breakfasts outside were a delight - on our mainly sunny days. A wonderful holiday for us.
