This was our 4th or 5th visit, which we tend to keep for November . The cottage is not for everybody ; we love the old world atmosphere and the open fire , and the creaky floorboards, and the low ceilings , and the sense of experiencing something quite different from modern city life with all its problems etc. This cottage is not for people who want every modern convenience ; its a remote location and all services such as wifi, mobile phone coverage, shops etc are not available. ( although wifi can be found for free in the local pub but not the cottage ). Its ideally situated for people who want to get out , walk, and enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Lakes. I suppose it is showing some ageing in some of the furniture and with the coal fire it does tend to become quite dusty after a while. For us, its hard to beat when selecting a Lakeland retreat.

Hello Derek, Thank you for your review. I bet Whillanside feels like a second home! It's a wonderful quirky cottage, isn't it? You couldn't have picked a better location to escape from the hustle and bustle for a while and get out and about on some fabulous walks. I'm thrilled you had a really great stay and I hope to see you again very soon!

This cottage has an definite atmosphere which piqued my spooky side. I enjoyed the feeling the cottage has but my and husband were not so enthusiastic and kids would not stay in rooms alone. It has a wonderfully dark Bri-wax woody interior which creaks and groans with history and character. The open fire which was very smokey was cosy even though we all smelt like bonfire night for the rest of the week. Beautiful old wood furniture adds only more to this creepy treasure of a cottage. Sofa and soft furnishings are dated and grubby in lounge and as mentioned the fire is very smokey but the kitchen is well equipped and lovely to cook and eat in. The gardens are wonderful with lots of tame Robins to watch and the Beck to listen to. Septic tank means no cleaning sprays so everything is a bit ‘sticky’ as there is a soap build up from cleaning. Bath is a wonderful deep soak if you are brave enough to have your back to the door! Hot water on a timer and plenty for one full bath. En suite shower is adequate but clean. Beds are clean and comfy and there is space to hang wet kit. And it’s in beautiful perfect Boot! The smokey fire put me off mostly as it really did get into our coats and hair. We have a fire at home and I’ve never known an open fire make as much smoke. Perhaps a chimney sweep would help and a cheery smokeless fire would keep the ghosts at bay?

Hi Shona! Sounds like you had a 'spooktacular' time! I've made a note of your comment re the fire so I can investigate further. I'm delighted you had so much fun exploring Boot - it really is a wonderful location, isn't it? Come back and see us again soon!

What a great historical cottage with lots of original features, if you want something unique and special, this is for you - but watch your head on the low doors and beams! Great location with many walks from the doorstep and a pub (feet) from the property with four other pubs in the valley. Would go back again.

Hi Russ, it really is an amazing cottage, isn't it? I'm thrilled you enjoyed all the original features - and got plenty of walking done too! I can promise you a warm welcome whenever you return.
