Plumbland is a small peaceful farming village tucked away in the little known Ellen Vale yet is within a short distance of numerous local attractions. The River Ellen rises below Trusmadoor between Great Cockup and Meal Fell in the area of the northern Lake District known as Back O’ Skiddaw and flows out into the Solway at Maryport around 25 miles later. Both ends of this peaceful valley are worth a visit, the northern fells are quiet and their rolling green slopes have a network of inviting grassy path to explore whilst Maryport is an attractive coastal town with attractions to entertain all ages. Rural footpaths link with quiet local lanes to provide opportunities for walks from your door or hop in the car to reach the northern fells within an easy 20 minutes. Your local pub can be found just down the road and 2 1/2miles away the small town of Aspatria offers a variety of local amenities and a railway station on the scenic Cumbrian Coast line.For those of you of the cycling persuasion there is no better place to use as your base. There are countless routes you can travel from the cottage whether it be coastal or over the hills inland. The cottage has it's own lockable bike storage to boot!
This area provides good access to the quieter northern and western fells and less used paths up the popular Skiddaw and Blencathra, whilst the bustling lakeside town of Keswick is still less than half an hour’s drive. The attractive market town of Cockermouth is only 7 miles away offering tours around the Jennings brewery, Wordsworth House, a variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants plus a range of independent shops to browse. The whole of the Solway Coast is yours to explore from the numerous bird reserves in the north to picturesque Allonby in the south or go a little further south to Whitehaven and the sandstone cliffs at St Bees. Carlisle, The Eden Valley and Hadrian’s Wall are also within easy reach giving you numerous options for walks and days out.
