Location of Underhow
From the South
Leave the M6 motorway at junction 36 for Kendal/Lakes.
Follow signs to Barrow (A590).
Turn right to Workington (A5092) 3 miles beyond Newby Bridge.
Follow this road for 10 miles (it bypasses Broughton-in-Furness).
Turn right to Ulpha before the River Duddon (at the traffic lights 3/4 mile beyond Broughton).
After 4 miles turn left in Ulpha village to the steep hill signed Eskdale.
Follow the fell road to the King George IV pub (6 miles).
After passing the King George IV, drive through a small wood and then turn left immediately before the hump bridge.
Take the left fork of the rough track with leads to Underhow (the right fork leads into the Green station).
There is parking for 2-3 cars at the property.
From the North
Leave the M6 at Carlisle (junction 44) and follow the A595 (signed Barrow)
Turn off at Gosforth and follow the road (6 miles) to Eskdale
Keep going right through Eskdale Village
You will pass St Bega's Hall on your right and the Outward Bound Centre on your left
Continue till you come to a hump backed bridge over La'al Ratty railway.
Turn right immediately after the bridge. The left fork of this rough track leads to Underhow (the right fork leads into the Green station).
There is parking for 2/3 cars at the property.
Please note: if you have sat nav, the recommended route often appears to be over Wrynose and Hardknott passes. These can be very lovely but are incredibly steep (England's steepest road with gradients of up to one in three), windy and narrow. Following this route is shorter in distance but certainly not quicker than the directions shown above.
