This cottage is full of character and makes a wonderful base for small families and couples. On the fringes of the Lake District, you’ll have walking opportunities in abundance and the sandy shores of the Solway Coast are just 7miles away.

This is a delightful cottage, right in the heart of the pretty village of Papcastle. Deceptively spacious, inside you will find welcoming accommodation for four. Down a step from the front door is the living room complete with feature exposed brick wall and cosy electric fire. This leads through to the spacious kitchen-diner, and the family bathroom is also on the ground floor. On the first floor there are two lovely bedrooms: the king-size room which can also be made up as a twin upon request, and the cosy double room which has its own en-suite shower room. To the front of the cottage is off-road parking for one small car, and to the rear is a pleasant enclosed patio garden and bike storage, a real bonus.

A former Roman settlement, Papcastle is a quaint village just outside the Georgian market town of Cockermouth. From peaceful riverside rambles to the old Roman Road, there are plenty of local footpaths to explore from the door.  Perfect for refreshments after a day out exploring, Cockermouth is just a 15-minute stroll away; visit the childhood home of William Wordsworth, indulge in some retail therapy or enjoy a drink, coffee and delicious homemade food at one of the town’s many quirky independent cafes and pubs. Both the Lake District National Park and the Solway Coast are within easy reach, so you’re perfectly placed for exploring both. Popular Keswick is less than a 30-minute drive away, known as the adventure capital of the North Lakes – why not sign up for an activity with one of the local adventure companies here? Try paddleboarding and raft building on Derwentwater, or have a go at ghyll scrambling or canyoning. Head west from Papcastle to the beautiful Solway Coast; enjoy a stroll along the sandy and pebble beaches whilst taking in the wide-open vistas out to sea, before indulging in an ice cream - a must for a day at the seaside.

This charming cottage is sure to delight. A step leads down from the front door into the lovely living room. By the door, there is a handy coat stand and shoe rack, ideal for storing wet weather gear. The local slate flooring and feature exposed brickwork wall give the room plenty of character, whilst the large window at the front is ideal for watching the world go by. The two-seater sofa and two inviting armchairs are positioned in front of the electric fire, and there’s also a TV with Freesat, perfect for relaxing evenings in.

Continue through to the fantastic kitchen-diner at the back of the cottage. The country-style kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven and hob, fridge-freezer, additional wine fridge and a handy microwave. There’s also a washing machine, should you wish to make use of that during your stay, and even a dishwasher, so there’ll be no need to fight over who has to do the washing up! The wooden dining table sits by the large picture windows, which flood the space with light, making this a delightful place for convivial mealtimes.

Also on the ground floor is the family bathroom. Compact, but with a WC, washbasin and shower over bath, all tastes are catered for, whether you prefer a soak in the tub or a refreshing shower.

Stairs lead up from the living room to the first floor, where you’ll find the two bedrooms. First up is the large king-size room. The free-standing wardrobe with drawers provides plenty of storage, and there’s a charming feature fireplace too. This room has zip-and-link beds and can also be made up as a twin upon request. The second bedroom is light, bright and airy thanks to the large window overlooking the rear of the cottage. It’s a cosy double with a useful, small built-in cupboard and a little en-suite shower room with WC, washbasin and shower cubicle.

Outside to the rear of the cottage is an enclosed, gravelled patio garden. A real suntrap, it’s a lovely spot for sitting out. There’s also a useful outhouse (accessed via the lane behind the cottage) which houses the BBQ, ideal if grilling is your thing. Bikes can also be stored in the outhouse, perfect for getting out and about on two wheels. Fans of fishing can use the outhouse to store rods and fishing gear; the picturesque River Derwent is a popular choice for anglers, and fishing licences can be obtained at the Tourist Information Centre in Cockermouth.

There is off-road parking for one small car in front of the cottage.

The cottage was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was very well stocked with anything youd possibly need to cook. The beds were comfortable and the road was quiet at night. The outside space was great for our small dog and would have been lovely to sit in had the weather been better. Very comfortable cottage in a friendly village. The house was warm and cosy, very well equipped with a pleasant small sunny garden where we were able to sit out and have a drink. It was perfect for us with our elderly dog.

A welcome pack of goodies and milk and prosecco in the fridge was a thoughtful touch. The bathrooms were very bijou which may not suit everyone.

A well equipped cosy cottage. We were 4 adults and appreciated having two bathrooms. No problem parking our 2 cars, smaller one at the front and could always find space on the road nearby for the other. Location is walkable to Cockermouth and also to the local pub in the other direction which did a great Sunday roast.
