  • Large garden leading down to the Force Beck
  • Backing onto ancient woodland between Coniston Water and Windermere
Property code: SZ445

Nestled between two of the Lake District’s most iconic lakes is this charming cottage with stylish interiors, heated bootility barn and a picturesque garden.

Located on the outskirts of Satterthwaite, a peaceful rural hamlet between Coniston and Windermere, is this beautiful home from home for four or five guests and one lucky dog. On the fringe of the Grizedale Forest, backing onto ancient woodland, you can ‘get away from it all’, embark on a number of wonderful walks and cycle routes right from your front door, or enjoy a more action packed holiday in the forest which offers Go Ape, zip wiring and Segway experiences.

The village of Satterthwaite is about 1.5 miles from the cottage. It has a popular Lakeland pub with a fantastic beer garden looking out over the stunning scenery of Grizedale, perfect for refreshments after a day out exploring. The market town of Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel, has an impressive selection of local independent shops, traditional pubs and restaurants, a large Booths supermarket, along with fabulous attractions such as the world’s only Laurel and Hardy museum. The nearby village of Hawkshead is wonderfully quaint, with white washed cottages dating back to the 16th century, charming old pubs and tea shops along narrow traffic-free streets. Visitors like to see the Grammar School, where in the 1780s William Wordsworth developed inspiration for this early poetry.
Why not catch the ferry from Hawkshead to Windermere? Indulge in some retail therapy, treat yourself to a coffee and delicious homemade cake in one of the quirky cafes or enjoy a lakeside stroll at beautiful Bowness-on-Windermere, just a 5-minute walk from Windermere Village. Spend a day exploring around wonderful Coniston. Learn all about Donald Campbell's water speed record attempts on Coniston Water at the village's Ruskin Museum, or enjoy a ride on the majestic Steam Yacht Gondola to enjoy the water at a more sedate pace. For avid fell walkers, the mighty Coniston Old Man is a must and your efforts will be well rewarded with stunning views from the top. If you fancy some fun on the water you can hire boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards at one of the boating centres on both Windermere and Coniston waters or for something more exhilarating take to Lake Windermere for waterskiing, wakeboarding and kneeboarding.
Whatever the time of year and whatever you choose to do on your holiday, this cottage is the perfect choice for your escape to the South Lakes.
Head inside and you're sure to feel to right at home. The cottage is full of charm and character from the wood burning stove and window seats in the open-plan living-dining room to the abundance of original beams and cottage doors. Gather round the dining table, which extends to seat six and is perfect for a catch-up on the day's events over a hearty home-cooked meal. Choose between one of the two two-seater Harris Tweed sofas, sheepskin covered armchair or the comfortable pouffe and relax in front of the fire, just perfect for cosy nights inwatching the satellite TV or making the most of the super-fast Wifi. The living area opens to the beautiful country kitchen. which is well equipped with an electric belling range oven with induction hob, microwave, a dishwasher and a larder fridge in addition to the large fridge/freezer in the barn. The chefs in the group are sure to love cooking in this well stocked kitchen which has everything you need for cooking and baking at home. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine and milk jug with a selection of coffee pods for you to choose from. The slate kitchen floor also benefits from underfloor heating and there is a roll back screen separating the kitchen and living areas should you want your dog to dry off after a walk or sleep in the warm kitchen in the evenings. Your dog is very welcome in the cottage and dog bowls, kibble caddy, poo bags and a dog bed are all provided.
Upstairs on the first floor are the three gorgeous bedrooms, all of which have comfortable mattress toppers and soft pillows. First up is the beautiful master bedroom. With a pretty metal-framed double bed, this is a calm and relaxing room complete with a quaint window seat, perfect for enjoying a peaceful moment with a cup of tea and a good book. There is also a handy chest of drawers and bedside tables with extra tall reading lamps, plus a tall boy for storage and a quirky wicker chair. The lovely, colourful twin room also has a delightful window seat as well as a wardrobe, bedside tables with tall lamps and a chest of drawers. Last, but by no means least, is the cosy single bedroom with its solid wooden bed and themed bed quilt, matching furniture all with a woodland feel.
Also on the first floor is the family bathroom, beautifully decorated with pale blue/cream tones and delightful quirky accessories and large floor mat. As well as the WC and washbasin, there's a bath with shower over and a separate handheld shower attachment, meaning all tastes are catered for, whether you prefer a long soak in the tub or an invigorating shower.
There is parking for one car in the courtyard in the front of the cottage and some occasion on road parking nearby. The stone barn next to the cottage doubles as a useful heated bootility room and in here you'll find a fridge-freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and an area used as a boot room with sofa, shoe, boot and coat racks for storing and drying all your outdoor gear. There's also a retractable washing line in the garden if you prefer to dry your clothes  outside using fresh air. In addition, there is space in here for storing bikes if you fancy exploring the surrounding beautiful countryside on two wheels or wetsuits if you prefer to venture into water sports. To the side of the cottage, accessed via steps on the other side of the barn is a wonderful garden, with an outside WC, areas of lawn, trees, ferns and flowers. Outdoor furniture, including a seating arbour and table and chairs can be found in a charming walled area that's perfect for an al fresco aperitif. At the bottom of the large garden is Force Beck looking out onto the ancient woodland and full of wildlife, a truly magical place that's perfect for a picnic lunch - or simply sit a while and ponder whilst listening to the relaxing sounds of the water flowing by. Please note, the garden is separated on either side from other cottages by there is no fence between the riverside of the neighbouring cottage gardens or the beck so children and dogs will need to be supervised by the riverside and take extra care.
This wonderful character cottage, situated in a beautiful peaceful spot surrounded by woodland and wildlife but within easy access of the Lakes there is to offer, is certainly not one to be missed.

No. 5 (Smithy Cottage) is delightful and the owners have thought of everything we might need. Good information pack about the cottage and local amenities. Some lovely walks direct from the cottage and good pub within a half hour walk. We had a lovely stay and it is in a beautiful location. Shop before you get there though!

The cottage is beautiful and so peaceful. We loved the garden, but it makes no mention on the listing that it is so far from the house. we were unable to easily let the dog out with a toddler and baby in tow. It's also not enclosed. The heating worked, but a huge shame the aga wasn't lit as this was mentioned on the listing. Also no mention it's in a group of properties Hide
