If you're visiting one of our self catering Lake District cottages why not treat yourself to a pamper day at one of our fabulous local spas. Below, we've compiled our Top 10 Best Spas in the Lake District to help you decide where to go for a relaxing day. Many of these spas feature wonderful pools, intense massage and aromatherapy saunas.
Armathwaite Hall, Bassenthwaite Lake
There could be no more relaxing location for a spa than this spectacular country house. Armathwaite Hall is set in 400 acres of park and woodland on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, one of the more beautiful and tranquil parts of the Lake District. This is the perfect place to unwind and the spa offers an infinity pool, an outdoor hot tub overlooking the stunning gardens, a hydrotherapy pool, aroma room, steam room, sauna, tropical shower and a gym. The spa lounge has a central fireplace and dining area. Armathwaite offers a range of beauty treatments or why not treat yourself to a spa day - I rather like the sound of the Indulgence Package...a full day of relaxation sounds wonderful! Holbeck Ghyll, Windermere
Holbeck Ghyll’s spa offers a number of indulgent day-spa packages where you can combine treatments and use of the spa facilities with a lunch in their fine dining restaurant - marvellous. After enjoying a variety of ESPA treatments, why not unwind in the outdoor hot tub, taking in the breathtaking views over Lake Windermere and beyond - with a glass of wine in hand of course! The Spa at High Head, Eden Valley
This day spa is located in High Head Sculpture Valley, a unique park well known for its large sculptures displayed along woodland paths. It hosts indoor exhibitions throughout the year and has a luxurious beauty spa in a Scandanavian style log cabin. High Head Spa is just 8 miles from Carlisle right in the heart of the Eden Valley, one of Cumbria's hidden gems. There's a full range of treatments including aromatherapy, hot stones massage, reflexology and manicures – after which, I suggest retiring to the Farmhouse Tea Room for something delicious to round off the day. We have lots of Cottages in the Eden Valley.
Lodore Falls, Borrowdale
You have probably visited the Lodore Falls on a trip to the Lake District – wonderful frothy waterfalls tumbling from the Borrowdale fells towards Derwentwater. Well, did you know that you could take a refreshing dip there before retiring to the Lodore Falls Hotel for a pamper session? The Falls Beauty Salon is a relaxing destination offering everything from Elemis body massages and facials to manicures and pedicures. Enjoy a swim in either the outdoor or indoor pool and a soak in their outdoor hot tub. They offer a range of packages - The Ladies Day which is ideal for a group of friends or, the Mother and Daughter day sound most appealing to me. The Langdale Spa is located in an idyllic 35-acre woodland Langdale Estate. On offer is a range of fabulous therapies and treatments for invigorating and relaxing - bliss! Amethyst Health & Beauty, Cockermouth
Let's face it; there are times when you're up for a full day's fluffy-robe-and-slippers, and other occasions when all you need is an efficient brush-up by an expert. Amethyst is just right – a full range of luxury Elemis skincare, plus reflexology, Indian head massage and aromatherapy.Men can have a traditional wet shave, and ladies can choose anything from a well-priced massage an express manicure. My feet spend most of their waking hours clad in walking boots, so a spa foot treatment and pedicure is all I need to have them looking ready for summer sandals again. Find your Cockermouth Cottage here. 8 Europe Way, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 0RJ.
North Lakes Hotel Spa, Penrith
If you have had a long journey on the M6 or A66 to reach the Lake District then you might like to know what there is a handily located spa right on junction 40. The North Lakes Hotel may have a central location but it has the feel of a country retreat. Exposed wooden beams, complimentary robes and slippers plus an inviting pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam room create the perfect calming ambience. The spa offers a full choice of treatments using ESPA products and has a newly opened Spa Relaxation Lounge which sounds delightful. Browse all our Cottages in the North Lakes here.
Elements Beauty, Cockermouth
Elements is just the sort of handy, expert place you need when the rest of your group is heading up Pillar Rock and your muscles have had enough. Try their Swedish Massage to assuage your aching parts, or indulge in some relaxing aromatherapy. A leg and foot treatment is wonderful if your tootsies have spent the rest of the week in walking boots, or go for the full works with a total body massage. After all this indulgence, I dare say the men will be jealous. No need – there's a full range of treatments for men, too. They are centrally located in Cockermouth, handy for our nearby self catering Lake District Cottages.
Oxley's at Underscar, nr. Keswick
The two Blue Fish Spas (the other is in Ambleside) are favourites with locals. Oxley's at Underscar is located in 40 acres of woodland on the slopes of Skiddaw, a couple of miles outside of Keswick; it feels like you're really out in the wilds, but it's convenient for much of the north and west Lake District. Here you can have the usual options including Decleor scented facials, Indian head massage and reflexology. I find myself drawn to their 'Earthly Pleasures' and 'Madagascan Dream' packages as they sound just lovely. Discover all our Cottages nearby here.
Aqua Sana, Whinfell Forest Park
Whinfell Forest Park is best known as a wildlife park and red squirrel sanctuary, but it also has a wonderful spa with extraordinary facilities! Relax by Laconium which produces gentle heat and was a favourite with Roman Patricians. Rub handfuls of ice over your body from the ice fountain to stimulate circulation. The Indian Blossom Steam Room was inspired by the ambience of Maharaja's palace. Then there’s the Balinese multi-steam bath, the Zen garden, the Japanese Salt Stream bath and multi-sensory showers. The outdoor heated pool and Hydro Pool are fab or have a nap on one of the Water Beds. Aqua Sana uses Decleor and Elemis products, including the Madagascan Red Island Ritual – a spicy-scented scrub, with warming fragrant oils. The top of the range Elemis Signature Pro Collagen Quartz Lift Facial is said to reduce wrinkles, for a little while, at least.
