The Retreat (Nr Cockermouth) is perfectly named; surrounded by peace, quiet, beautiful gardens and stunning views of Skiddaw, it is a world away from everyday life. This 250 year old stone built house has plenty of character and quirky features whilst the rooms are spacious, bright and well equipped. The Retreat (Nr Cockermouth) sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms so ideal for families or couples travelling together. The split-level living room has comfy sofas and chairs gathered around the wood burner in one half and around a television in the other half, giving flexibility if not everyone in the party wants to do the same thing at the same time. Take some time out to relax in the spacious jacuzzi bath or explore the garden to find your own favourite spot to sit and listen to the quiet punctuated only by birdsong. Dog owners will love the enclosed woodland area for morning walks, but parents of young children do need to be aware of the stream flowing through parts of the garden.

Set off a quiet lane, The Retreat is on the edge of the small village of Sunderland which has the advantage of being secluded but not remote. Many people will pass by this rural haven on the A595 or A591 completely unaware that less than 2 miles down a side road is a charming village offering walks along footpaths and quiet lanes with beautiful views of the northern fells.  The predominant sound here is that of the birds singing, joined perhaps by the odd sheep, cow or tractor in this working landscape. Walks from your door can take you up onto the hill towards Blindcrake to discover ruins, limestone outcrops and plenty of wildlife along with stunning views along Bassenthwaite Lake with the fells arrayed around it. A perfect introduction to some more serious walking later in the week. Rural it may be but it is not isolated, with easy access to both A595 and A591 Cockermouth is just over 10 minutes drive and Keswick around 20 minutes' away. Both have plenty of places to eat, but there are closer pubs at Bothel and Castle Inn plus a lovely café at Moota for a lunchtime or afternoon treat.

The Retreat (Nr Cockermouth) is so peaceful you may not want to leave; but when you are ready to go out there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. The northern Lake District is on the doorstep, for keen walkers Skiddaw and the Thornthwaite fells will be tempting you from the window and there are plenty of other options too. Road cyclists can explore the quiet lanes or take on the challenge of Whinlatter Pass whilst mountain bikers have the Back O' Skiddaw area to explore plus the trails at Whinlatter. The bustling market town of Cockermouth is nearby as is the ever popular hub of the northern Lakes, Keswick. For a day away from the fells the Solway coast is only 10 miles away, the pretty village of Allonby has a huge sand and pebble beach with views across to Criffel in Scotland. Day trips could include Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall country or a trip down the coast to the sandstone cliffs of St Bees and the historic harbour town of Whitehaven.
