The Retreat is perfectly named; surrounded by peace, quiet, and beautiful gardens, and with stunning views of Skiddaw, it is a world away from everyday life. This 250-year-old stone built house has plenty of character and quirky features blended with lovely, modern living. In the split-level living room, you can spend an evening relaxing in front of the TV in one half, or snuggle into comfy sofas around the wood burner in the other half. Further relaxation is possible in the spacious jacuzzi bath or in the beautifully tranquil garden. There is an enclosed woodland area for morning walks, though parents of young children should be aware of the stream flowing through parts of the garden.
Set off a quiet lane, The Retreat is on the edge of the charming village of Sunderland near Cockermouth. Its tranquil location is still well-connected, with the main A595 and A591 roads less than two miles away, opening up the wider reaches of the Lake District. The predominant sound in this small village is that of the birds singing, joined perhaps by the farm animal or tractor in this working landscape. Walks from your door can take you up the hill towards Blindcrake to discover ruins, limestone outcrops, wildlife, and stunning views of Bassenthwaite Lake.
When you are ready to explore beyond this peaceful home, there are plenty of options. Skiddaw and Thornthwaite fells will tempt keen walkers, whilst cyclists can explore quiet lanes or the tracks of Whinlatter Forest. The bustling market town of Cockermouth is nearby, as is the ever-popular Keswick. The Solway Coast AONB is only 10 miles away and day trips are perfect for visits to Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall country.
