Waberthwaite has one main claim to fame; it is the birthplace of the traditional Cumberland sausage. Family butcher's RB Woodalls have been producing Cumberland sausage in the village for over 175 years, and their treasure trove of edible delights is housed in the village store only a stone's throw from the Orchard Cottage. The Brown Cow is a great family pub serving good food and a great selection of beverages. It is an easy walk from the property and is a lovely place to enjoy a drink year round with a beer garden for the enjoying the sunshine in the summer months and a cosy atmosphere on a cold winter's evening. Half a mile from the cottage, down a quiet country road, the Estuary and shore are within easy walking distance. Here the Rivers Irt and Esk merge and reach the Irish Sea; a real haven of beauty and tranquility. Take a walk along the foreshore and sand dunes with the mountains and fells behind you. The nearby Eskmeals Nature Reserve mean this area is a haven for many sea birds (including a number of protected species) and wildlife - remember to listen out for the famous natterjack toad on your evening walks.
