Our family spent a fantastic week at The Old Homestead. It was spotlessly clean, plenty of outdoor space for children of all ages to play. We liked the fact that all the bedrooms were en suite. The only negative thing I would say is that the kitchen could do with a few more baking trays and dishes but having said that we managed ok.

The Old Homestead is a wonderful property located in a stunning area in north-west Lakeland in the the Lorton Valley with views down Buttermere and the to the surrounding fells. Zen and Jayne would get 20 out of 10 as hosts if there were a rating! They did everything they could to make our stay a memorable and enjoyable one and we so hope we can return one day. The only reason we have marked the 'Comfort and Equipment' and VFM scores slightly down is because of the kitchen. It is small for a property that is very large can accommodate 25 people (we only had 11 using the ground floor) and we struggled a little. Ideally the kitchen would be larger, have a window and a little more large-scale cooking equipment, pots and pans and utensils. However, THIS IS BEING PICKY and these comments should not detract from the overall review and we would return yesterday and stay forever if we could! Old Homesteads is spotless, en-suite in every room is marvellous and the showers are probably the best you will find on planet earth! Thank you Zen and Jayne, you and your property helped in a huge way to make our wedding such a wonderfully memorable experience. Steve & Allison

The Old Homestead has a great many positives including a beautiful and very well maintained garden with a stunning backdrop of The Fells. It is also very clean and utterly silent, so I came home very rested having experienced completely undisturbed sleep for the whole stay. All rooms gave en suites and are clean and have comfortable beds and nice linen and towels. However, given the property is in a rural location I feel some sort of boot room or drying room is essential. The rooms have drying racks but nothing ever dried. This resulted in a Q for the washer/drier which was small and simply not up to the job of drying clothes for a group of ten never mind more when the house is at full capacity.
The kitchen does not have a window or anywhere for people to sit or commune together whilst cooking or tidying. The lack of window becomes oppressive and uncomfortable if in there with the cooker on. I simply could not envisage it being enjoyable if the house wasn’t full occupancy.
Visitors with a dislike of dark sitting rooms would not enjoy this house as the windows are very small. This would not be a problem if the weather was on your side as the garden is glorious.
The owners Zen and Jayne are very approachable and welcoming. Great house and garden but could benefit from some improvements.
