Things to do nearby Artist's Barn
Artist's Barn is rurally located, near Mungrisdale a hidden gem of the Lake District. Due to its location, Mungrisdale and nearby Mosedale see much less vehicle and foot traffic than the rest of the Lake District, despite unparalleled access to the fine fells of Blencathra, Bannerdale Crags, Souther Fell and High Pike.
This quiet corner of the northern fells offers something for everyone, be it a gentle ramble through the lanes and fields or miles of grassy mountain sides and access to the infamous Sharp Edge on Blencathra. One of the best walks nearby is the Bowscale Tarn walk, a route on a clear pony track which is suitable for all ages and abilities, with the option to extend the route uphill.
The local pub is the Mill Inn, a 17th Century coaching inn with a delightful riverside beer garden. A huge millstone is set into the bar as a decorative reminder of the building’s history. The location by the river is serene and restful; the wooded gill is a perfect sanctuary for local wildlife. Red squirrels are a popular sight here and the wild fell ponies are quite simply a delight.
The east ridge of Bannerdale Crags is an exciting scramble and easier than it appears from below. Whilst the crowds congregate on nearby Blencathra, you can enjoy this thrilling ridge all by yourself.
Souther Fell is one of the last Lake District outposts before the land levels out towards the Eden Valley. You can often see hang gliders taking off from the smooth grassy summit. Legend has it that a spectral army was seen marching along the top of the fell, but on inspection in the morning, there were no tracks to be found. You can read more in our blog on Souther Fell.
Keswick is a 15-20 minute drive from the cottage and is considered the adventure hub of the Lake District. There is a vast choice of outdoor activities on two feet, two wheels and on the water. The town also has lots of places to shop, eat out and some good wet weather activities.
Artist’s Barn is also handily located for visiting Ullswater and the surrounding area – all within a 20 minute drive. The lake is also very popular for all manner of watersports including windsurfing. You can launch your own boat at Howtown, about 40 minutes from Artist’s Barn or take out temporary membership of Ullswater Yacht Club, half an hour away.
