Things to do nearby Mill Cottage (Newlands Valley)

Nestled right in the heart of the Newlands Valley is Stair Mill, a former corn mill now converted into two holiday cottages.

Wainwright rated the Newlands Horseshoe as amongst the best, and it is not difficult to see why. Every step upwards is rewarding and the views sublime. But you don't have to scale the heights of the big fells in Newlands to experience a magical day out. Explore the valley and it's myriad of paths across fields and over becks. Wander through Keskadale and see a farming landscape unchanged in years. Venture up Rigg Beck for a peek into Buttermere. Take an evening stroll along Scope Beck to the reservoir and if the weather is nice, climb Robinson to watch the sun set over the west (don't forget your head torch for the walk back!).

You can also partake in organised activities from the Newlands Adventure Centre, which is a few minutes walk down the road from Stair Mill. They offer a wide range of activities from ghyll scrambling, climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, archery and much more.

The valley was the backdrop of Beatrix Potter's 'Mrs Tiggy Winkle' with Little Town, Skelgill and Catbells clearly recognisible from her sketches. You can wander up to Little Town to see the whitewashed farm buildings. The tea room is open during the summer months serving cream teas, homemade cakes, homemade quiche of the day and more.

Continue past the farm and up to the church where a tea room opens on Sundays between April and October. The church is in a beautiful position with views all around and inspired a poem by William Wordsworth.

The Swinside Inn is a half mile walk along a quiet lane. The beer garden has beautiful views of the valley in particular Barrow, the fell that is almost directly opposite. The beer garden catches the afternoon and late evening sun. Inside you will find a warm welcome and a great menu.

Braithwaite is the nearest village to Stair Mill and has a well stocked shop selling fresh bread and with an excellent deli counter. You can walk across the fields to Braithwaite following Newlands Beck and the signs across the fields. Braithwaite has two good pubs both serving food at lunch time and in the evening.

Stair Mill is perfectly situated for a quiet Lake District escape whilst remaining within easy access of amenities in nearby Keswick, the main Lakeland town in the north-west. It has all the usual amenities plus a choice of over 20 pubs, cafes and restaurants.
