Location of Elm How

Directions

By Car from the South

Access to Elm How is by a single track unpaved gated road about 1.5 miles from Patterdale
Sat Nav will take you to Patterdale Village however we recommend using the following directions to reach the property.

Leave the M6 at junction 36
Turn left onto the A591and follow this past Windermere
At the mini roundabout turn right onto the A592 over Kirkstone Pass
In snowy/icy conditions we recommend using the M6 junction 40 to avoid the Kirkstone Pass (see directions from the North)
From the Kirkstone Pass (A592) you pass Brothers Water Inn pub on the left
Continue into Patterdale (just under 3 miles) passing The White Lion Inn on your right and Patterdale Village store on your left
Continue along the road for half a mile passing the Old Police House on your right and prepare to turn left
Turn left on the lane marked with a dead end sign 'Lane to Grisedale'
Follow this road for a mile, being aware of walkers. This is the main foot route to Helvellyn
There are four farm gates to pass through. Please close them behind you.
After the second gate the road bends to the right, ignore this bend to the right and keep left and straight on up the rough track
Elm How is beyond the final gate

From the North
Leave the M6 at junction 40
Follow the exit for the A66 and follow this to the first roundabout
Take the second exit for the A592 for Ullswater
Follow the A592 for 11 miles to Glenridding
Follow the road for a further mile to Patterdale
As you pass the village sign prepare to turn right
There is a post box set into a slate wall on the opposite side of the road and a dead end sign 'Lane to Grisedale
Follow this road for a mile, being aware of walkers. This is the main foot route to Helvellyn
