Drigg, Holmrook Family
- We used the holiday for Granny's 80th birthday celebration. 16 in all, including 4 boys, one a toddler. Some of us are local and Esk View has always been a familiar land-mark in the valley. Others had come as far as Stirling, in Scotland, North Yorkshire, Rochdale and Nottinghamshire. So when we started to think about the weekend, it had to be held at Esk View. We booked over a year in advance and were pleased we did as the weekends were booking quickly.
The cottage is a large comfortable country house. Well used and tired round the edges, but that added to its charm. Lots of inside room for the children to get lost in and not cause any trouble. Lots of room for the adults to sit around in small groups catching up. The dining room was fantastic, with its 16 covers. Room to sit comfortably and a large lounge area. Even a piano where one of the boys tinkled a tune now and again. The kitchen was smaller than expected, but even with 6 people helping with the evening meal there was plenty of room for all. Very well equipped, everything we needed was there. Loads of crockery, cutlery, cooking ware, etc etc. A very useful conservatory set over the back door with a large bench and many pegs for hanging up wet jackets and storage of boots. The bedrooms were great, 6 big rooms and one single, all were extremely comfortable, with big fluffy duvets. All we had to bring were towels. Only one negative and that was there was no downstairs toilet, but our group managed perfectly.
We had one glorious sunny day when everyone went their different ways to enjoy the views. There had been torrential rain during the days beforehand and the river and becks were in full spate; very spectacular, especially the one behind the Mill, it was angry white water. There is even a lovely little sitting out area that was used for tea and cake after our walk. The garden surrounding the cottage is vast and safe. The boys loved exploring round all the steep paths and steps.
Sunday was a wet and windy day, but it didn't matter, local friends walked round from the Ratty to visit and pass on their birthday messages and a good day was had by all, everyone admiring the cottage and amazed by the size of it inside.
Plenty of room at the side for parking. So all in all a perfect weekend. You could spend the weekend without using the car. 2 local pubs selling good food within a short walking distance. The Ratty Railway just along the road with trips down to Ravenglass and the coast. Walks galore and cycling paths provided too.
All the family had a great time and we all said we would love to visit again. Definitely recommend to all, young and old.

Hi Sylvia, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It sounds like you had a marvellous weekend. What a perfect way to celebrate Granny's special birthday, I hope she had a wonderful time surrounded by family and friends. How lovely that you were all able to come together from so many different parts of the country. I bet the children were in their element! I'm so glad you were able to make use of the piano.
I really hope you can all get together again soon and come back to have some more adventures and make more wonderful memories.
