Beautiful Cottage in a great location. Local village of Lorton a short drive away and towns of Keswick and Cockermouth 10minutes drive. The cottage is fairly isolated which was perfect for us and in a great locations for walking and cycling. Thank you for a lovely stay, we will be back later in the year and have already recommended to family who have booked

Thanks for your great feedback, Nathan. I'm so glad you enjoyed your break here and hope you returned home relaxed. Look forward to seeing you in the Lakes again before too long - and thanks for recommending the cottage to your family!

We really cannot fault Darling How Cottage. We are seasoned Lake District visitors, spending around 9 weeks a year up here so know the area very well. Darling How Cottage was perfectly positioned for us at New Year - quiet and (sort of) remote, yet only a 10 minute drive to either Keswick and Cockermouth to stock up on supplies. The cottage had everything we needed - it was well-equipped and really sympathetically restored & furnished. The woodburner was brilliant to have at this time of year, especially when there is snow on the ground. The owners are lovely and add in lots of little extras that you might not always find in other holiday properties. It was great that they decked the cottage out with a Christmas Tree & trimmings as well as giving us some fizz to see in the New Year.

There are many walks you can do straight from the door so you could spend the whole week not using the car at all - however, other areas are easily reached by car, such as Crummock Water, Buttermere, Ennerdale etc. This was the first time we had been to the Lakes at New Year so it was a bonus for us to have a bimble around Keswick in the dark with the Christmas lights on & to go to the Kirkstile Inn in Loweswater on New Year's Eve & Day (book a table well in advance if you want to eat there at this time of year as it was standing room only on New Year's Day at 2.30pm)

We had varied weather, including snow, hail & gales so it was great to come back to a warm & cosy property after a day walking the fells- a couple of other reviews have mentioned that it was difficult to keep the cottage warm - we did not find that this was the case and we were able to up the temperature in the rooms as we wished. The log burner (as they do - we have them at home) really chucked out the heat and kept us snug. We can also say that there is now a frying pan ! We did take our own but clearly Femke had already gone out and bought one ! There is no need to take your Wainwright guides either as the whole set are there in the cottage to use, so we will leave ours at home next time.

Bring some bird seed for the Robin - he's a cheeky chappie and flew into our car when we arrived - he's friendly and will greet you every morning.

All in all, we had a lovely holiday - we've already booked again for next year.

Hi Brian, Jill and Dylan, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It sounds like you had a wonderful time at Darling How Cottage. The location is fab isn't it? Like you say it's nice and peaceful but also perfectly placed for visiting some must-see places in the Lakes.
The owners are the perfect hosts aren't they? I'm sure you appreciated the New Year fizz! You were very lucky getting in to the Kirkstile Inn, well done.
I'm so glad you've already booked a return visit, you can be sure of a very warm welcome. Until next time.

We had a lovely stay over Christmas at Darling How Cottage. When we arrived the owners had left us a bottle of prosecco and mince pies, which was a lovely surprise. They had also decorated the cottage for Christmas, including a lovely 'real' Christmas tree. The cottage is very well stocked, with everything you would need. We had brought dishwasher tabs, cleaning products etc. expecting to have to supply them ourselves - but everything was supplied!
The location of the cottage is truly amazing. It feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, but it's not a far drive from either Cockermouth or Keswick. We enjoyed many walks from the cottage and Whinlatter.
Our only small criticism would be the heating and temperature of the cottage in winter. The heating seemed to be set on a timers, which meant there were times we couldn't seem to get it to reach 20 degrees. This meant that the bedrooms were quite cold at night. Although I appreciate that it is controlled by air-pump heating, I still think guests should be allowed to control the time and temperature.
We would definitely stay again and would highly recommend. Thank you for a really enjoyable stay.

Hi Kristy, I'm so pleased you had such a wonderful Christmas break at Darling How Cottage. I can't think of a better welcome that prosecco and mince pies! It's such a treat to arrive at a cottage and find that the owners have thought of everything you might need isn't it?
It sounds like you had lots of fun exploring the area, the location really is stunning and so handy for visiting some wonderful places.
I'm sorry to hear you had a problem with the heating, if you had let me know at the time I would have arranged for someone to sort it out for you. I'll pass your feedback on to the owners, thank you. Until next time!
