Things to do nearby Beech Barn
Yanwath is ideally located for exploring North and East of the Lake District as well as the unspoilt Eden Valley or even Pennines. At the heart of Yanwath is The Yanwath Gate Inn, an award winning and highly recommended pub serving a selection of local ales and Cumbrian food.
Ten minutes from Beech Barn is Ullswater, one of Lakeland's longest and most majestic lakes. Lake steamers operate between Pooley Bridge, Howtown and Glenridding - idea for a linear walk or a leisurely sail across the magnificent Ullswater (there is a bar on board). You can also hire boats from Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. It is perfect for water sports of all descriptions and there are plenty of coves and beaches for picnics or fishing.
The walking in this part of the world is unrivalled. You can choose between low level lakeshore and valley bottom paths or up on the high fells – Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in the Lake District.
One of our favourite walks is to Aira Force, a tumbling waterfall that drops an impressive 65ft and can be reached by an enchanting stroll through ancient woodland and landscaped glades. The perfect place for a family walk and picnic and a mecca for photographers!
From Ullswater, you can nip over Kirkstone Pass which takes you to Ambleside, with Windermere and Bowness just beyond.
Haweswater is a very quiet and remote lake with a flooded village at Mardale Head. If you are looking for a quiet day on the fells, Haweswater is a great place to escape to from the crowds. Many great mountain days start from here, the long craggy ridge leading to High Street, Kidsty Pike and the Garburn Pass all offer fantastic walking and the opportunity to see England's only Golden Eagle.
Beech Barn is ideally positioned to provide easy car access to beautiful country houses, Hadrian’s Wall and other visitor attractions such as the houses of Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth. The Penrith area is especially well catered for with a host of watermills, potteries, alpaca and ostrich farms. The town of Penrith (five minutes) is well equipped with cafes, pubs, restaurants as well as a number of high street and independent shops.
Keswick is only 30 minutes from Beech Barn and is the adventure hub of the Northern Lake District, with a vast choice of outdoor activities on two feet, a bike, and on water. The town offers a wide selection of places to eat and drink, a theatre and plenty of rainy weather activities. Derwentwater has an easy, ten-mile path around it, and a pushchair-friendly stretch along its western shore. Why not take a trip on the launch and hop on and off at any of the 7 stages around the lake - great for exploring and stretching your legs if you do not want to walk all the way round! Derwent Marina and Platty+ are two of the many providers for water sports. Here you can hire boats of all descriptions and receive tuition too.
