Keswick is one of the most popular locations in the Lake District. At the heart of its enduring popularity is the beautiful scenery, the ease of access to the fells, the fantastic range of activities, shops and places to eat and drink. It is friendly, busy town but there are plenty of quiet spots too. Here is our guide to enjoying the best of Keswick.

Newlands House is perfectly situated for getting out and about to explore Keswick and the surrounding area. It is located in a popular residential street a short walk from the centre of town. Some of the highlights of Keswick are close by including Castlehead Wood, Walla Crag and Derwentwater.

Keswick is undoubtedly popular with walkers, climbers and cyclists. There are plenty of fantastic fells to climb and low level walks by the lake or in the valleys. Borrowdale is a popular location for climbers and is home to the famous Shepherds Crag where you might see local climbing legends such as Chris Bonington or Dave Birkett.

If you are looking to try a new activity or hire an outdoor instructor then Keswick is the place to be. There are plenty of companies and trained instructors in the town eager to show you the ropes be it on a guided walk, climbing, watersports or by bike.

The jewel in Keswick’s crown is Derwentwater. This beautiful lake is surrounded by terrific mountain scenery and has several picturesque islands. The Keswick Launch operates a service around the lake stopping at several jetties around the lake. It is ideal for sitting back and enjoying a cruise or getting off to stretch your legs and hopping back on at a later stage. You can also hire rowing boats and explore the islands.

As well as outdoor activities Keswick is a popular destination for shoppers. There are a growing number of independent shops selling interesting local and regional wares. There is a lovely bookshop that opens late during the summer and a fascinating second hand bookshop on Station Street. As for outdoor shops Keswick has a wide range of independent retailers staffed with outdoor aficionados as well has several high street outdoor retailers. There is a popular Victorian Fayre and Christmas Market as well as regular local markets through the year.

For eating out Keswick boasts plenty of great places to visit. There are several stylish bars to rival the traditional pubs as well as lovely tea rooms and cafes. The town also has an Art Deco cinema showing new releases, children’s Saturday Club and on Sundays there is a film club at 5pm. The Theatre by the lake is on the edge of Derwentwater and shows a varied programme throughout the year.

In the wider area there is plenty to see and do within a 30 minute radius. The Borrowdale valley is at the southern tip of Derwentwater. This beautiful valley is a dream destination for walkers with all manner of walks from low level rambles to all day mountain hikes on offer here. Parallel with Borrowdale is the picturesque Newlands valley. The valley bottom is typified by patchwork fields and is surrounded by impressive mountain ridges.

You can also visit Lake District destinations such as Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere in around 30 minutes. Ullswater is 30-40 minutes drive away.
