Milecastle is part of a conversion of a former sandstone threshing barn built around 1900 right on top of the roman remains of the vallum associated with Hadrian's Wall and a quarry for stone used to build the wall itself. Many buildings along the line of the wall contain stone reclaimed from the wall itself in times before it's historical value was realised. Who knows but that the barns of Bleatarn Park Farm may be among them! A spacious, characterful and thoughtfully designed retreat with two bedrooms sleeping four people Milecastle is located on the first floor of the barn and is all on one level. The owner has ensured that everything you may need is on hand and also provides a welcome pack including milk, biscuits and wine. All you have to do is relax, enjoy your holiday and make the most of the beautiful views over the fields from the living area and master bedroom.
Parking for the cottage is in the shared gravel and paved yard to the front, with each property in the complex having its own named space. A glazed door leads you into a communal hallway and stairs giving access to Milecastle. At the top of a single flight of stairs the solid wood front door leads into a spacious hallway with practical laminate floor and plenty of room for hanging coats and storing muddy boots. All the other rooms lead off from this central hallway.
Through the first door on the left is the family bathroom. With black tiles on the floor, white wall tiles and a white suite, the bathroom has a clean, modern feel, whilst an exposed ceiling beam gives the room character. A P-shaped bath with shower over gives you the best of both worlds. Either way the heated towel rail means lovely snuggly warm towels when you’ve finished!
Opposite the bathroom is the cosy carpeted bunk bedroom. The bunks are full size singles, so ample for adults as well as children. A full height window with railings across the bottom half looks out onto the courtyard and a lovely feature is made of the small arrow-slot window, which has its own individually made internal shutter. Storage is provided in a solid wood wardrobe with drawer beneath and there is a TV/DVD on the wall - perfect for keeping the children entertained if the adults want a lie in!
At the end of the hall is a beautiful double bedroom. Spacious and bright, this pretty room has a modern finish but retains the character lent by the barn with a feature beam. The window looks out onto a lovely peaceful view of fields and woods, ideal to enjoy alongside a morning cup of tea in bed. This attractive room is carpeted and contains a solid wood wardrobe with drawer beneath and two bedside tables, each with drawers and a lamp, there is also a free standing full-length mirror. If you bore of the view (or for after dark!) there is a TV/DVD on the wall to keep you entertained.
To the right at the end of the hall is the bright main living area. This open-plan room contains the kitchen-, dining- and living areas and with a roof light and feature arrow-slot windows as well as the main windows overlooking fields, this room is lovely and light. An exposed timber beam running the entire length of the room combined with the variety sizes and shapes of the windows gives this room its own unique character, a welcoming space in which to spend some time. To the left side of the room is a compact but nicely laid out kitchen area with tiled splashback. The kitchen is well equipped including under counter fridge, microwave, dishwasher, electric hob, oven and cooker hood and if you do need to wash anything up you can rest assured that there will be washing up liquid, dishcloth and tea towel provided. The cupboards contain all the crockery, cookware and cutlery you need to prepare and eat a tasty meal, which can be enjoyed at the table seating four people in the corner. The rest of this room provides ample space for two comfortable two-seater sofas facing each other over a coffee table, a perfect arrangement for socialising over a cup of tea or glass of wine - or both! A bookshelf holds a selection of books and maps, plus a radio/Ipod dock whilst the LCD TV with DVD player is mounted on the wall.
Just across the yard behind the parking space is your enclosed private patio area with table and chairs and a BBQ, perfect for making the most of long summer evenings.
Across the yard is a communal laundry and drying room for all the cottages; with 3 washing machines and 2 dryers there is plenty of capacity for all and washing powder is available if you forget! Also in this room are a further selection of books and jigsaws and a freezer, each drawer of which has the name of a cottage on so no confusion over whose is whose, plus iron and ironing board. There is an OS map on the wall for planning walks and you can also store bikes securely in the room behind.
