Directions to Middle Cragg Cottage, Buttermere CA13 9XA
We do not advise using Sat Nav as the postcode is the same throughout the valley bottom, people have been directed onto gated roads and unsafe routes, and been told they’ve arrived when miles away. Please use a map! From North or South on the M6 Leave at Junction 40 (Penrith) and follow A66 Westbound towards Keswick.
Via Newlands Pass Please note that Newlands Pass has several steep sections and hairpin bends. It is also very narrow in places and is not safe in ice or snow. Continue on A66 past Keswick and turn Left into Braithwaite, signed for Newlands Valley Keep Left in 50 yards or so signed for Newlands and Buttermere Very soon turn Left at T junction and over little bridge. Follow narrow road over Newlands Pass and descend into Buttermere Turn Right at the bottom, pass The Bridge Hotel on your left and continue up the hill Middle Cragg Cottage is on your right at the top of the hill with the entrance into the gravelled yard between stone walls just past a ‘sheep’ sign and before the entrance to Cragg House Farm on the left. Via Whinlatter Pass Turn Left from the A66 as above into Braithwaite but continue through the village onto the Whinlatter Pass. (a narrow section in Braithwaite but then the road widens for the pass itself) Once over the pass take the Left Turn signed Buttermere and Left again in 100 yards or so. Follow through High Lorton to Low Lorton and turn Left at T junction onto B5289 Follow for 2 miles or so and Turn Left signed for Buttermere (still B5289 but a Left Turn!) Follow the road past Crummock Water. Pass the Buttermere Village sign then National Trust car park on your right and Middle Cragg Cottage is on the Left, the first group of cottages before you descend into the village centre. The entrance to the yard on the left is between stone walls just past the entrance to Cragg House Farm on your right. In ice or snow the safest route is via Cockermouth and through to Lorton. Then on as above. Via Honister Pass The Honister Pass comes over to Buttermere from Borrowdale. It is rather longer than coming via Newlands and also not advised in ice or snow. Once into Buttermere follow the road through into the village and up the hill to find the cottage on the right at the top as before. All roads to Buttermere are scenic and you are coming to a beautiful valley.
Parking at Middle Cragg Cottage: There is no parking for very large cars or Camper vans outside the cottage. There is need and room for 3 cars to park in the yard. Neighbours park by the left and right hand walls and we ask you to please park with your front or rear between the two white stones on the ground, the other end pointing directly at the entrance. This makes a sort of fan shape and works well!
