- The cottage was really cosy and warm to arrive to. It's furnished well and the decor was good. We had taken some cleaning equipment (my husband is in the vulnerable category) but the cottage was cleaned so well, that we didn't feel the need to do anything additional. The kitchen was very well equipped, including tea towels, dishwasher and washing machine tabs, cloths and scrubbers, washing up liquid - thank you! It would have been helpful to know this in advance - I could have saved time packing that stuff and had extra space in the car.
The cottage is so warm that despite the weather, we only used the wood burner twice. The open plan sitting and eating area was great for us all to be together, but have some space at the same time.
The beds were really comfortable and had nice linen. It all felt tastefully done out.
The cottage is a bit in the middle of nowhere which was fine for us - we wanted somewhere to escape to and cosy up in, and it's perfect for that. But if you want to be able to walk to a pub or shop, you can't - Broughton in Furness is about a mile or so away, but the road is busy and there's no pavement. There is a footpath, but it was VERY muddy so my husband had to backtrack. There is a little garden at the front of the property - again fine for us as it was October and we had no intention of BBQing.
The shop and butchers in Broughton were great. We had a nice meal in the Black Cock. The Kings Arms also looked good. We did a local walk in Dunnerdale which had spectacular views. The only downside, we felt, was the location. You are right on the south western tip of the Lakes and to get up to the main lakes was a drive, sometimes well over an hour. That said, it's worth it - we particularly loved Ullswater. But something to bear in mind maybe.
Cottage = perfect. Location = less so, for us. Big thank you for equipping the cottage so well, and cleaning it thoroughly. We had a lovely week.
