  • Occupies a tranquil village location within rolling Cumbrian countryside, with the lively town of Keswick only 1.5 miles away

  • A wealth of outdoor, adrenaline-filled activities nearby from mountain biking to climbing to canoeing
Property code: SZ328

Families will love this property as its location allows you to make the most of what the Lake District National Park has to offer. With lakes, fells, mountains, market towns and forest parks nearby, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay with great amenities nearby, then this is the place for you. You can sit indoors or outdoors, disengaged from the modern world and unobserved by it. The views of the Lake District mountains are glorious and the apartment is a superb base to plan which walks you might like to take next, as well as a comforting home to return to after a day on the fells.

The busy market town of Keswick with all it has to offer is only a mile and a half away. You can walk there along the road, or on one of the many paths cutting through the village. There is plenty of choice when it comes to pubs and places to eat, and shops for outdoor equipment. By the lake you can hire a rowing boat or take a trip on the launch. For evening entertainment there is the Alhambra Cinema, over 100 years old yet offering contemporary films and comfort or the renowned Theatre by the Lake.

Applethwaite itself is a little village, facing south and getting the best of the sunshine. From the front door there are countless walks. A favourite is up Latrigg (which has more fantastic views of Keswick and the surrounding fells for minimal effort), and to mighty Skiddaw beyond, one of the Lake District’s highest mountains. If something a little more stately is required why not take a gentler stroll around the beautiful grounds of nearby Mirehouse where you can choose from formal gardens, a wild flower meadow, a heather maze, a rhododendron tunnel, poetry walk and four adventure playgrounds in the woods. All in all, this cottage is an ideal jumping off point for all that the Lake District has to offer.

For larger parties, this property can be booked with a second cottage that sleeps six guests.

This cottage is conveniently situated all on one level, meaning most of the rooms benefit from some of the most wonderful views the northern Lake District has to offer.

There are 20 steps leading down from the parking area to the front of the cottage. You enter via the porch which has a slate floor and is ideal for storing your outdoor gear after a day out on the fells. You'll even find a freezer neatly concealed in the right hand cupboard of the unit in here!

A hallway then leads to the open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining area. There are picture windows which offer a stunning vista of some of the best known Lakeland fells. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, including an electric hob, oven and grill, dishwasher, under counter fridge and a microwave. As mentioned earlier the freezer can be found in the cupboard in the porch. There is a dining area which easily seats four and stored in a cupboard next to this is a multitude of board games to enjoy during evenings in front of the cosy multi fuel stove. The lounge area has comfortable seating next to the picture windows to take full advantage of the glorious views. Why not have a game of trying to count the number of fells you can see? Or if you're feeling brave enough, name them.

Just off the open-plan area is the double bedroom with a fully-glazed south-facing French door which opens out into the garden; so you could stroll straight outside or sit in bed whilst having a morning brew, enjoying the magnificent views, listening to the morning birdsong and thinking about which fells to tackle that day.

There are two single bedrooms; one offering similar views to the lounge, both with wardrobes and a chest of drawers. There is also a bathroom which has a shower over the bath, a WC and a wash basin. There is a separate cloakroom which houses a WC and the washing machine.

Outside there is mature garden for you with lawn and shrubs. There is a patio area with outdoor seating for you to enjoy those stunning views whilst having a well earned glass of wine after a day exploring the Lake District.

Bike storage is available. This is also shared and can be booked on a first come, first served basis. You do need to bring your lock for the bike storage, this has a standard padlock type latch.

It's hard to find a better location than this if you don't want to be in town - walking distance from Keswick and the start of some great hikes including up Skiddaw from the doorstep. The views are simply amazing whatever time of year you visit. We have returned to this property again and again and hope to continue to do so. The log burning stove iRead mores a real asset and enhances the cosiness of the flat. The steps up and down to the property might not suit some people however. Hide

We have been visiting lower house and/or upper house most years for the last twenty with our family. We all love it. The views are wonderful, it is quiet and peaceful and an excellent base from which to explore the northern lakes.

This comfortable well equipped apartment is in a fantastic location. Amazing views and great walks from the front door. Easy to get into Keswick, 5 mins by car or less than 30 mins walking. Short walk to the local hotel where you can get food and drink. It is great for a family with lots of room and the outside space is brilliant. Only negatives arRead moree the steps down from the parking area could be tricky for less mobile people. The apartment above could be noisy depends on who is staying. Hide

Lovely location, would make a great house but has been split into flats badly. The lower house is damp and cold. You can hear every footstep of the people above as well as their tv, washing machine and them washing up. There is a gloomy filth to the lower house. Great location. Lovely view. Easy drive into Keswick. Walkable too, although we didn't do it. Well equipped. Well set out for privacy, eg garden / terrace separate areas for the lower and upper house. There were three of us. We suspect it would feel a little crowded with four. Even the most considerate guests upstairs can be heard sometimes, heavy Read morefeet walking up and down. It wasn't too bad, just not used to it. Hide

Lovely situation and very well equipped, but the steps down from the car park are quite steep. We were unlucky that we could hear the guests in upper house running around a lot, which was quite annoying.

Lovely property, you may be lucky to see the red squirrel on the patio. Beautiful view from the property, also worth mentioning if you turn right out of the property, walk up the road to a gate on the left, this leads along a footpath - there is a gorgeous view from a small bridge across the stream.

The cottage's selling point was the view and its location in a peacefull area yet very close to Keswick. It had everything we needed and the garden was lovely too. We even managed to spot the red squirrels. Unfortunately, the guests staying above did not respect the rules of the house. They were lound and the music was on till late at night. We werRead moree lucky they went after few days. Otherwise we would not get any rest at all .So this could be problrmatic for someone. Hide

Lovely cottage with stunning views. Another holiday let above so you might hear your fellow guests now and then but don't let that put you off. Handy for Keswick and great walking / trail running from the door.

This is a delightfully situated cottage with a fabulous wide ranging view south across the lake and fells. The road it is on is very quiet and a pleasant walk in itself and there are many other, easily reached walks nearby. The furniture is very comfortable, the whole cottage was very warm, and the kitchen well equipped. Perfect for us as a couple.

Very well maintained cottage, magnificent outlook over the fells, first class facilities. Having a cottage above could be a drawback with inconsiderate tenants. On our stay the neighbours were excellent and posed no problems at all. Best cottage holiday we have had!!
