Directions

From the North

  • exit the M6 at junction 40 (Penrith) and make your way to the A591 which is the main road to Grasmere. 

  • Take the first sign to turning right into Grasmere village – Swan Lane , B5287 - the turning is opposite The Swan hotel (if you miss the turning, carry on to the next roundabout and turn right, and follow directions from the South, below).

  •  Follow the road into the village, Swan Lane quickly becomes Broadgate. After passing the Rothay Garden Hotel you will come to a small parade of shops then a green on your left and the Heaton Cooper art gallery and Emma’s Dell café on your right. Here the road bears left at 90 degrees – you need to TURN RIGHT here, up a single track lane which goes up the left hand side of Emma’s Dell café. 

  • The road is unnamed, and there is a sign saying no vehicles beyond this point, but ignore this and continue. Laurel Cottage is 100yards up ahead on the right.

From the South

  • exit the M6 at junction 36 and take the A590 north towards Windermere and Kendall. The continue on this road and do not turn off it, and it becomes the A591. Stay on the A591 following signs to Windermere, then Ambleside and ultimately to Grasmere. 

  • The first signpost to the village is on a mini roundabout, just past Wordsworth’s Dove cottage and the Daffodil Hotel. Take this exit left off the A591. If you miss it, carry on to the Swan Hotel and follow the directions from the North – above. 

  • Follow the road as it winds its way through the village, it is quite narrow in places. When you come to the Inn at Grasmere hotel the road turns right at 90 degrees, AT THIS POINT YOU NEED TO TAKE THE SINGLE TRACK LANE DIRECTLY AHEAD OF YOU, which runs up along the left hand side of the Emma’s Dell café, giving way to any traffic coming from Langdale Road on the left. 

  • The road is unnamed, and there is a sign saying no vehicles beyond this point, but ignore this and continue. Laurel Cottage is 100yards up ahead on the right.

PARKING 

Please park in front of the cottage, but ensure you leave access to the garages nearby – these are used by our neighbours and they need to be able to get in and out at all times. We usually park on the left hand side of the cottage as you are looking at it. There is comfortably space for 2 cars if you park like this.
