Lovely quirky property with loads of character and plenty of space. Fantastic setting with great views. Lovely and peaceful and with immediate access to the fells without needing to use the car. Quite a few pubs serving good food also within walking distance.

Booked a family holiday for 14 before lockdown hit - rearranged with just two families so we were within the rules

Top 10 amazing things about Hollin How

1) garden - amazing gardens for the kids - perfect place to play games and the property also has extensive grounds with a small tarn and rocks to climb out the back
2) the little ratty steam train runs by at the bottom of the garden and the kids loved waving as they heard the whistle
3) log fire in the main area - v nice as even in June the nights were a bit chilly
4) eskdale stores - just round the corner - convenient place to get basics and also they do a good selection of BBQ meat
5) George IV pub - friendly local 5 mins away - we went twice - sat outside for a few drinks and chatted to lovely locals and had a fine selection of local ales and some decent whiskeys
6) bower House Inn - brilliant pub for little ones - 5 minute drive - football pitch - loads of outside tables and a play area for kiddies - good food and great service
7) location was fab for walks from the door - we walked to mitredale, did a loop to connect with grounds via Japanese garden - also great stroll around gardens
8) location for some great walks - did Irton fell and Whinn Rigg and Muncaster Fell - all within 10 mins
9) v easy access to Little Ratty - kids loved it - we booked in advance and did the whole trip from Dalegarth Station to Ravenglass and back - at the moment trains are not stopping at the Green Station in eskdale green
10) in perfect weather eskdale was in striking distance of lovely beaches - St Bees was great - large Sandy beach, enough room for cricket and ice cream van and little shop at back of beach as well as play area for kids

Things to develop for the property

1) Aga is hard to use for novices - but got the hang of it
2) days can sleep 14 but 10-12 would be perfect - we had 10 and we had loads of room - kitchen table and outside table would struggle to fit 12+
3) if kids get travel sick or you are a nervous driver I wouldn’t recommend it as all drives are Narrow lanes and blind bends - we loved it and found it exciting but others wouldn’t
4) we had perfect weather so did not have to worry about getting wet - but it got very midgey after a damp morning in eskdale - be warned!!

Would 100% recommend it to friends and would defo come back to the area -lovely place - obviously much loved and cared for

Hi Mike, thank you for taking the time to write a review. It sounds like you had a fabulous time, you certainly managed to fit a lot in!
It's the perfect place for a break isn't it? There's so much to see and do in this part of the Lakes and the cottage is lovely and cosy to come home to after a day out exploring.
I hope you can come back for some more Lake District adventures soon.

Returning to the Lakes as a family to rest, remember and experience all the pastimes we used to like when we lived there.
We were able to walk out straight from the house but the surrounding gardens were wonderful to sit and do nothing if one wished.
We had some wet days but walked anyway and the house was particularly equipped by having a large boot room where we left our dripping coats.Immediately into the warm dry house, very cosy indeed. Also plenty of room to spread out!
An excellent time had by all
