General Description

The Hill is a stunning secluded property sleeping up to eight people in four comfortable bedrooms in quiet Matterdale near Ullswater. With some sections of the house dating from the 16th Century it boasts many characterful details such as exposed beams, a traditional range and log burning stoves while having all the modern home comforts you might hope for. It is a warm and welcoming cottage with multiple communal spaces and an enormous garden.

On arrival at the gates guests are greeted by a long driveway where you start to appreciate this wonderful property. The stone cobbled courtyard has plenty of space for parking and a substantial stone outbuilding in which you can lock bikes or kayaks. The entrance has beautiful stone arched, porchway with slate seat. This leads on, via a handsome oak door, to the large reception area with storm porch and bags of space for all your party's coats and muddy boots. The right of the hallway leads to the main living area.

This is a wonderfully welcoming room with its exposed beams, gorgeous traditional cast iron range and log burner, perfect for curling up on one of the comfy sofas on a chilly night and soaking up the character of this lovely space. There is a Smart TV with Freesat, DVD player and the hub to the wifi which has also been boosted throughout the house. Through here you'll find the large dining room with its own wood burning stove and the staircase to the first floor. The dining room has a heavy wooden extending table which is large enough to seat the whole party. It is a wonderful room for a special meal or just for planning your adventures. There is also some gorgeous Lakeland photography here to inspire your trips out of doors.

Beyond this room lies the spacious kitchen/diner. It is extremely well equipped with good quality appliances, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and range style fan oven with six gas hobs. The kitchen has beautiful oak cabinets and granite worktops. The breakfast table in here makes a lovely spot for sharing a cuppa or just for social food preparation. There are also double doors leading out to the terrace at the rear of the property, perfect for throwing open on sunny mornings and enjoying the view. Alternatively, why not get up early and see what wildlife has been tempted along to the garden. The garden visitors here include hares, herons, deer and frogs not to mention a wonderful array of birds.

Returning to the other end of the house, off the main hallway is the snug or second living area. It's another gorgeous space to relax with double doors out onto the terrace. What's more it means there's extra space for your party to spread out to meaning no more arguments over the sofa! The owners have thoughtfully provided a range of books, guides, maps and DVDs in here. Why not pop some music on the stereo and use this as your holiday planning headquarters? A heavy curtain separates this room from the bunk room. These have full size single mattresses. At this end of the house there is the downstairs shower room and the large utility room with washer and dryer.

Moving upstairs to the beautiful galleried landing area and the stunning bedrooms. All of the rooms have exposed beams and stunning views over the surrounding gardens, fields and fells. Firstly, the dual aspect master bedroom has a super-king bed with heavy wooden bedstead wardrobe and drawers. There is a spacious en-suite bathroom with double ended bath and its own separate walk-in shower enclosure. The second bedroom has a super-king bed and three lovely windows out onto the gardens and Little Mell Fell. This also benefits from a beautiful en-suite bathroom with full bath and shower attachment. The third bedroom on this floor is a twin which can be converted into a super-king should your party require it (please advise us on booking if this is the case), en-suite bathroom with bath and shower attachment.

Outside the house the spacious gardens are a revelation. There is a glorious raised stone terrace with dining furniture and quite staggering views, a pond with year-round nature interest for little ones and extensive lawns to cartwheel away till your heart's content on sunny days. The terrace makes a glorious situation for outdoor dining while the raised patio with sunbeds gets every single drop of sunshine that the day offers. Perfect for enjoying a good book. It really is a magnificent setting for escaping the busy outside world and finding absolute peace and tranquillity.
