Property code: SZ233

This traditional cottage is a delightful retreat for up to six guests, offering a vantage point for exploring the Western Lakes and Cumbrian coastline.

This traditional end of terrace cottage dates back to the 1700s. Located in the Lakeland village of Gosforth, it benefits from excellent access to the fells and the coast, being just a 10-minute drive from both. There are extensive views from the upper floors across the countryside to the fells of Eskdale and beyond. The property has been lovingly refurbished to provide comfortable and homey holiday accommodation for up to six people. The characterful cottage has accommodation over three floors in a quirky yet cosy fashion and retains many original period features including the detailed stonework over the original front door and exposed stone walls inside. With lots of different staircases and nooks and crannies, it's the perfect spot for a game of hide-and-seek!

Gosforth is a small, friendly village with a popular shop and cafe, a bakery and several pubs serving food and local ale. The spectacular valley of Wasdale is a 10-minute drive away. The walking here is superb with the peaks of Great Gable, Pillar and Scafell all on offer. Just 2 miles away you can enjoy the coastal sand dunes and sandy beaches between Seascale and Drigg

Eskdale is also close at hand, just 15 minutes away. There are hundreds of incredibly pretty walks in the valley. You can also enjoy a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway - a popular miniature railway that travels seven scenic miles to the coastal fishing village of Ravenglass. Muncaster Castle is near to one of the railway stops. There is always plenty going on there all year round, especially for children.

The original front door has been closed up and entry is via the back door accessed through the front yard and rear garden or through a new front door. The back door opens into the newly fitted kitchen which is incredibly well-equipped for holiday self-catering and features an electric Range cooker in a recess, microwave, dishwasher, plenty of storage space and a separate utility room. There is an original sandstone lintel above the cooker and old steps down to the small utility room.

A door opens to the old original stairs down to the utility room. This is a small room that houses a freezer, a washing machine, iron and ironing board, cot, high chair and hot water bottles for the colder nights. There are steps from the kitchen to a small alcove for hanging coats and storing boots and the door to the bathroom. There are hooks for dog leads and a supply of doggy bags. The bathroom has a Velux window above a bath, a separate shower cubicle and WC.

Three steps from the kitchen lead to the sitting room, please mind your head. There is a comfortable sofa and armchair and a basket of cosy fleece blankets provided for snuggling up on winter evenings. The sitting room is arranged around the fireplace and Smart TV, comfortably seating four people. A selection of local interest and walking mAgazines are provided as well as a varied selection of DVDs. The wood burner is set in a feature fireplace with a decorative wooden plinth. The initial supply of fuel (fire lighters, kindling and logs) is provided. Further supplies are available locally. The sitting room looks to the front of the property and there is a door to exit the property from the front. A door leads through to the separate dining room. The room is furnished with a dining table with seating for six people and a window to the garden that catches the sun throughout the day.

A stone curved staircase leads down to the snug, a warm and cosy space with an exposed stone wall and a feature stained-glass window. There is a TV and DVD, and double sofa bed in the snug but the stairs are not suitable for the less-abled.

The first floor is accessed via a door to stairs from the kitchen. The carpeted stairs lead to the first floor where there is a double bedroom with an exposed stone wall, hanging rail and window overlooking the fields and then towards the coast and Isle of Man.

There is a door to a further flight of stairs, with a hand rail to the attic bedroom. This bedroom is in the eaves of the property and has a lovely outlook over the surrounding countryside and far-reaching fell views to Black Combe, and the coast. On a clear day you can even see the Isle of Man. The bed will be made up as a king unless otherwise requested. It can also be made up as a twin bedroom on request. The stairs to the attic bedroom are carpeted but fairly steep.

Outside there is a multi-level garden. Across the lower area is a patio with picnic bench and wood burner. There are steps to the upper decked area that has outdoor sofas and fabulous views over the fells. The garden is enclosed by a low fence and has banked planting. The front yard is enclosed with a wall and a gate.

We had a fantastic few days at Hardingill Cottage. Very well equipped, cosy and comfortable. I'm just gutted the weather wasn't better to make more use of the garden and the beautiful views from the top! We had a trip out to the beach at Seascale which our dog, Kai, absolutely loved. 5 or so minute drive away and empty and a trip to ennerdale waterRead more. There are a couple of dog friendly pubs and a restaurant in Gosforth as well as a local shop, all within easy walking distance. Hide
