Axbridge Somerset, Family
- Gable Cottage is in a great location, perfect for Wasdale Head, Eskdale and Ennerdale. During our visit I finished my 2,000 ft peaks in England Wales climbing Great End, my final, 466th mountain. As there were no champagne glasses or a beer glass at the cottage to celebrate with we bought some and donated them to the cottage!
The cottage is cosy and warm with comfortable beds and a good shower. It is nicely decorated and furnished and benefits from excellent drying facilities in the utility room and above the wood burner. However, it really does need a washing machine or even a spin dryer, easily accommodated in the utility room. With soaking wet gear day after day we could have done with this facility as wringing clothes out by hand is never very effective. Fortunately, we spotted there wasn't one on re reading the details the night before we left, so packed extra kit as the weather forecast for the week looked poor. If we had been staying for 2 weeks we might have gone out searching for a laundrette!
Previous reviews have been picked up various points which really do need sorting. The infamous kitchen drawer was mentioned by a reviewer in July and just needs some new runners. The light fitting over the kitchen sink also needs sorting. Finally the kitchen table only really accommodates 3 people, the 4th person gets a rum deal especially if you need to get anything out of the microwave. Some minor re-planning of the kitchen could easily accommodate a better table to seat 4/5 people properly. But this is really always going to be a 4 person cottage with only 1 loo in the bathroom despite it having 6 bed spaces.
Finally there does need to be some instructions covering basics like how to operate the boiler and wood burner, where to buy logs and coal, where to park a second car and bin collection day. With Covid compliance needed these could either be e mailed out in advance or simply typed up, covered in plastic or framed (for easy cleaning) and hung on the utility room wall - this is what other cottages have that we have stayed in this year.
Overall the advantages far outweighed the dis-advantages, there is a lovely small garden which would be great to sit out in the summer, the kitchen is well equipped and the wi-fi passable for e mails and browsing. The owners, kindly allowed us to re book in October when lockdown prevented us from coming in May. The location is superb and we would come again especially as I am now finishing off my Wainwrights and outlying fells and there are still a number to do in this area!

Hi Mike, very many thanks for taking the time to leave such detailed comments - I really do appreciate it! I have flagged your comments up with the owners of Gable Cottage and can confirm that their trusted handyman will be addressing the issues with the kitchen drawer and light fitting over the sink. There is a washing machine and a tumble drier in the garage for guests to make use of, so I am sorry that you were not aware of these during your stay. We would have been more than happy to point you in the direction, so I am sorry we were unaware you were struggling. Well done on completing your 200ft peaks challenge! That's quite a feat and well deserving of some fizz! Here's to more fabulous fell top adventures!
