Close the iron gates behind you and ascend the woodland driveway to the magical world of Daweswood in Patterdale. Sleeping up to 10 people in five stylish bedrooms this Edwardian Arts and Crafts gem is an enchanting house you will want to visit time and time again. Whether you’d like to get out walking in the magnificent fells, get muddy while mountain biking, socialise in elegant reception rooms or just go hunting for minibeasts and forest elves in your own private woodland, Daweswood is a magical place from which to do it. Built in 1909 from local materials it's a fine example of the craftsmanship of the era while also being a warm and welcoming home.
Patterdale is a charming village to the south of gorgeous Ullswater. Well known as the staring point to walk up Helvellyn, the third highest of England's mountains, it also has a well-loved pub and village shop which sells fantastic homemade bread. The walking and cycling here is second to none with high fells to challenge you and gentle trails to suit all abilities. At nearby Glenridding you can make the most of gorgeous Ullswater itself by hiring a boat or catching one of the beautifully stately steamers operating throughout the year. Why not take a bike ride part way around the lake and catch the steamer back?
Slightly further afield there's much to explore. Take in some of the history of the area at Dalemain, a beautiful Georgian mansion and gardens with a rich history dating back to Saxon times. In the other direction head over Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside, one of the Lake District's most beloved towns. Check out the galleries or take in a meal and film at Zeffirelli's or Fellini's, two independent cinemas with excellent vegetarian restaurants attached to them. Whether you want to get out and explore or just escape the bustle of the 21st century and be enveloped by the history and comfort then why not gather the family in this magnificent building and its magical grounds.
