Just half a mile from the banks of Ullswater, this romantic retreat forms the gable-end of a terrace of rural 19th-century stone-built cottages and makes a delightful hideaway for two guests exploring the heart of the Lake District. Offering breathtaking views and chances to spot a range of wildlife including red squirrels, this traditional Lakeland miner’s cottage is a fantastic holiday home for couples. Featuring exposed beams, wooden flooring, a freestanding bath and a wood burner this beautifully updated property has been tastefully furnished to provide a fresh, relaxing hideaway in a beautifully secluded wooden enclave.

This airy and welcoming cottage features a beautiful pitch-pine beamed lounge/diner with plenty of seating, a friendly wood burner, a pretty dining area and slate floors with underfloor heating, making an ideal space to snuggle up and chat into the night. The dining area is perfect for a romantic meal for two which you can rustle up in the kitchen which has a range of useful equipment and beechwood work surfaces. Heading up the short staircase you will find a light, spacious bedroom with a king-size bed, underfloor heating, ceiling beams and tastefully selected furniture, along with an en-suite bathroom with wainscoting. Outside, the garden has a shared lawn, mature apple trees and outdoor furniture offering a lovely spot to sit back and take in the stunning surrounding views.

Sitting above the Glencoyne valley, the cottage is close to Aira Force Waterfall (2.5 miles), Helvellyn (5.5 miles) and the villages of Patterdale and Glenridding (both within 2.5 miles) which have some cheerful pubs and restaurants. This is a wonderful area for walkers of all abilities, or you could head to Ullswater and cruise across the lake by steamship. Also nearby is the lively market town of Keswick (15.5 miles) on the banks of Derwentwater.

Our stay at Ullswater retreat was picturesque and relaxing. The cottage itself is beautifully put together, felt lovely and clean and had everything we could possibly need. We loved the fact that we could look out of the window and usually find a red squirrel looking back at us. A dear little cottage that has been beautifully renovated keeping its character features. Cosy and well equipped. Lovely cottage in a very private area just off the lake of Ullswater. Views are really lovely from the shared lawn, but not the most ideal of places to bring a dog if you're wanting to let them off the lead outside. Lovely week overlooking Ullswater, warm and comfy. The red squirrels and their antics were very amusing and really made for a great holiday. The cottage is absolutely beautiful and the location is stunning. You can walk for miles from your doorstep and the views of the lake (I would recommend getting up the hill behind the row of cottages to see the sunrise) are wonderful. Cosy, comfortable cottage in a beautiful location. Great base for local walks and really nice to come back to after a long wet autumnal hike. Kitchen is well equipped (no microwave however) and to top it off, saw red squirrels, woodpeckers, tits and nuthatches from the kitchen window every day!

Fantastic secluded location buzzing with wildlife. We were greeted by 3 red squirrels and a woodpecker before we even had the key in the door. Lovely and warm and spacious with a great bath for a soak after a long walk. The drive up is rugged but we managed it in a Mondeo. Stayed at ullswater retreat for a week in September, the cottage is beautifully done out and in a lovely setting with views out to the lake. Lots of wildlife around too, especially red squirrels! The kitchen was well equipped, it has an Aga with full instructions, there wasn't a microwave though. We have just returned after a lovely stay at the Ullswater retreat, it was perfect! The location was great with stunning views over the lake. The cottage setting was beautiful with wildlife surrounding us such as red squirrel, a variety of birds and also deers. The setting was more ideal for walkers as the pubs and shops were quite a walk away which meant we stayed in the evening. Apart from that the cottage interior was beautiful and clean and we had a glorious stay.

The cottage is beautiful in a stunning location. It has all 2 people need for a relaxing break. Our dog enjoyed it as well. The cottage is on National Trust land, and a Red Squirrel conservation area. We think it would be prudent to let people know this. We saw at least 2 red squirrels on the feeding boxes that are outside of the cottage.

The Lake District National Park is situated in the north west of England in the county of Cumbria. It is famously home to England’s tallest peak, largest lake, deepest lake and some of the most beautiful views in the British Isles. It has been a major draw for holidaymakers for over 200 years and its popularity shows no signs that this will diminish anytime soon. Adding to the spectacle, there are long-distance walking trails, endless history and culture to appreciate, as well as an unbeatable array of outdoor activities to try in some exceptionally eye-catching locations.

Mountains, lakes, rocky rivers, waterfalls, and valleys lined by stone walls characterise the Lake District National Park. Add to this vision slate-roofed villages, winding country roads, arctic alpine and wildflower meadows, and beautiful birds such as skylarks, curlews, meadow pipits, and lapwings, which all provide the perfect backdrop for a holiday. The poet, William Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere, wrote a guidebook of the area in 1810, and very little has changed in the region to tie it into the modern world. Natural landmarks include Aira Force, Tarn Hows, Scaffell Pike, Castlerigg Stone Circle, The Old Man of Coniston, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Pull on your walking boots and traverse the long-distance walking trails of the Lakes like Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, and the Tour of the Lake District.

As you get to know the region better, you will find evidence of prehistoric and ancient man in the Lake District, as there are standing stones, circles, and rows to find, as well as one of the largest standing Roman buildings in the UK. Visit Ravenglass, one of the UK’s oldest settlements and the only coastal village in the Lake District; it has beautiful waterside views of the Munros of Southern Scotland. Remnants of the region’s industrial activity can be traced in the form of bobbin mills, gunpowder mills, and mines. The Lakes also have some famous literary and art associations, including Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, Arthur Ransome, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, JMW Turner, John Constable, LS Lowry and Percy Kelly.
