Property code: LLH52

Attractive barn conversion cottage, contemporarily styled and yet retaining some lovely period features, located on the edge of Hawkshead village.

Retreat to this inviting former barn on the fringes of the Lakeland village of Hawkshead. Sleeping five guests, the handsome, three-bedroom property is one of several rustic holiday homes in this charming cluster. From here, wander into the Cumbrian village for provisions or to dine out. Visit museums offering a glimpse into the lives of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. Spend days by Lake Windermere or Coniston Water and visit National Trust sites and beauty spots.

Climb three steps up and then down over the wall, then let yourselves in. Wander down the hall into the lounge to light a roaring wood burner and relax together at the end of each fun-filled day. Switch on the Smart TV in here or watch a DVD. Head into the kitchen/diner, which has underfloor heating, to make tasty meals for your party and to dine together. Find a washing machine in here and access to the courtyard garden. Discover a double bedroom, with TV/DVD and en-suite bathroom, also downstairs. Climb the open-tread staircase to find a single, first-floor bedroom and shower room, then more narrow cottage-style stairs to a light-filled double bedroom in the attic, with sloping ceilings and a Smart TV/DVD. Have coffee out in one of your courtyard areas on lovely summer mornings. Find parking for two cars.

Stroll into Hawkshead to visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery, dedicated to the children’s author, or the Old Grammar School, once attended by poet William Wordsworth. Venture 3.5 miles to the National Trust’s Claife Viewing Station, with its spectacular Lake Windermere vistas. Spend an afternoon at Wray Castle, 3 miles away. Make trips into Ambleside, 5 miles away, for a broader selection of shops and restaurants. Drive 7.5 miles to Lakeside to catch a cruise on the water or a heritage train.

A lovely cottage just outside Hawkshead. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay and is very conveniently located. Everything is very clean and good quality. It has a very small patio which was fine for us but no garden for kids. We would definitely return.

Beautiful cottage in quiet hamlet of Colthouse 7 minute walk from Hawkshead Centre. Superb main bathroom. Very comfortable lounge with very good smart TV and wi fi. Well equipped kitchen diner. The surroundings are a bird lovers paradise. We only used our car once. We walked from the cottage 4 days.

Great position, perfect for two couples, bathrooms were great. Great to walk into Hawkeshead. We loved it. However there was a distinct air of neglect inside & out. If you have a low profile tyre car it will ground on the badly maintained driveway. We were concerned as we booked as a non pet & found on another site that one dog allowed, not good . A lovely cottage in a great location, only half a mile walk to Hawshead. Excellent WiFi (essential with teenagers) and a smart TV. Good off road parking. Great under floor heating in the kitchen. Comfortable and quite spacious. Be aware the 3rd bedroom is up a very narrow steep staircase, which was fine for our teenager. Everything you need for a wRead moreeek away, except I thought the washer would have been a washer/dryer as there's no washing line. Hide

This is a lovely, well-equipped cottage in great location. We were there in a heatwave week, so really appreciated the patio and garden furniture. The kitchen had everything you could need, the bathrooms are a good size and the shower is great! The location is perfect - a 10 minute walk into Hawkshead, and plenty of walks you can do from the immediRead moreate area (it's a nice walk up to Tarn Hows, for example). Recommended, and would stay there again. Hide

This is the 2nd time we have visited Ducklin Cottage. It is such a perfect base to explore the area. We walked from the cottage to Wray Castle, and it is only a few minutes drive to Coniston and Grizedale Forest. It is also only a 10 minute walk into Hawkshead. We hope to visit again soon. Thank you..

A very comfortable and cosy cottage ideally situated just 10 minutes outside Hawkshead which has plenty of amenities for food and drink, a small Co-op and other shops. There are also plenty of walks nearby and it is not too far to drive to other areas of the southern lakes. I would happily stay here again.

Map
Note: As the postcode is used to identify the general area of the property, it may not always reflect its precise location, therefore please only use this map as a guide.

The Lake District National Park is situated in the north west of England in the county of Cumbria. It is famously home to England’s tallest peak, largest lake, deepest lake and some of the most beautiful views in the British Isles. It has been a major draw for holidaymakers for over 200 years and its popularity shows no signs that this will diminish anytime soon. Adding to the spectacle, there are long-distance walking trails, endless history and culture to appreciate, as well as an unbeatable array of outdoor activities to try in some exceptionally eye-catching locations.

Mountains, lakes, rocky rivers, waterfalls, and valleys lined by stone walls characterise the Lake District National Park. Add to this vision slate-roofed villages, winding country roads, arctic alpine and wildflower meadows, and beautiful birds such as skylarks, curlews, meadow pipits, and lapwings, which all provide the perfect backdrop for a holiday. The poet, William Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere, wrote a guidebook of the area in 1810, and very little has changed in the region to tie it into the modern world. The centre of the Lake District is dominated by its craggy mountains such as Scafell Pike and its exceptional lakes like Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater, Coniston Water and so many more.

Each of the Lake District’s towns has a village sensibility, yet all of them offer handy amenities, cultural attractions and some of the North West’s best places to eat and drink. Top visitor attractions include The World of Beatrix Potter, Sizergh Castle, Hill Top, Go Ape Grizedale, Grizedale Forest, Fellini and Zefferelli’s Cinema/Restaurants, the Bluebird Mk II, Ravenglass Roman Bathouse alongside a world of outdoor sporting and activity providers. Natural landmarks include Aira Force, Tarn Hows, Scaffell Pike, Castlerigg Stone Circle, The Old Man of Coniston, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Pull on your walking boots and traverse the long-distance walking trails of the Lakes like Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, and the Tour of the Lake District.

As you get to know the region better, you will find evidence of prehistoric and ancient man in the Lake District, as there are standing stones, circles, and rows to find, as well as one of the largest standing Roman buildings in the UK. Visit Ravenglass, one of the UK’s oldest settlements and the only coastal village in the Lake District; it has beautiful waterside views of the Munros of Southern Scotland. Remnants of the region’s industrial activity can be traced in the form of bobbin mills, gunpowder mills, and mines. The Lakes also have some famous literary and art associations, including Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, Arthur Ransome, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, JMW Turner, John Constable, LS Lowry and Percy Kelly.

It could take you five lifetimes to visit each of the places mentioned here; a good way to see more of the Lake District National Park is stay at one of our self-catering holiday cottages. Our range of holiday properties in the Lake District and Cumbria gives you the perfect place to stay in the north west countryside or on the coast. Our self-catering cottages in the Lake District offer lovely holiday accommodation to suit all your needs, from cottages to rent for a romantic getaway to larger properties for the whole family – we even have dog-friendly holiday homes across the Lake District too.
