A plethora of independent shops, pubs and restaurants line its pretty streets, and it’s also home to attractions such as The World of Beatrix Potter and Windermere Jetty Museum. The area is a haven for fell walkers, with numerous much-loved routes to explore, including to the spectacular viewpoint at Orrest Head (7 miles). Alternatively, journey to Grizedale Forest (9.5 miles) to explore the woodland walks and sculpture trails.
