An idyllic rural retreat for friends or families, this stone cottage combines period features with modern comforts, including two bathrooms (one en-suite) and three very pretty bedrooms. Set in gorgeous countryside at the foot of the North Pennine Fells, it’s an excellent base for exploring the Lakes, the Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish Borders and the North East in general. Head out on foot or by bike from your door, or perhaps tackle Cross Fell, 4 miles, the highest peak in the Pennines, enjoying incredible views from the summit. The historic market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, 9 miles, offers a good selection of traditional shops, a riverside walk and an imposing Norman castle. The larger town of Penrith is 10 miles, while Pooley Bridge, at the head of Ullswater, is 15 miles. From here you can board a steamer for a scenic lake cruise and iconic mountain views.
After a day of adventuring outdoors, head into the entrance hall and kick off your hiking boots. Step into the open-plan living space and admire its rugged wooden beams, deep-set windows and exposed stone walls. This room features a large kitchen and dining area, with everything provided for the chef to create gourmet meals – plus a dishwasher to help with cleaning up. The lounge area focuses on a large fireplace with a crackling wood burner – perfect for taking off the chill in the cooler months. The fireplace is surrounded by comfortable seating and a TV and DVD player for relaxing evenings together. Four stone steps lead up to the lovely conservatory, a wonderful place in which to sit back, relax and admire the views of the garden. Do be careful with small children, however, as there is a drop. A central staircase leads to the first floor, where there’s a mezzanine level overlooking the living space. This can sleep an additional guest on request. To the left is a gorgeous double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, while along the landing you’ll find a king-size room which can be converted to a twin on request, as well as a twin bedroom and a well-appointed family bathroom.
From the conservatory there are four steps down to the beautiful patio garden, surrounded by trees and shrubs. This is a tranquil spot for drinks and al fresco meals as you listen to the birdsong. You’ll also have access to a shared garden with a lawn. There is private parking for 2 cars outside the property.
