This is a cosy getaway ideal for a couple, single traveller, or even a family with young children. It is a fantastic central location just five minutes from the centre of town and with easy access to the stunning scenery of the Eden Valley, North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District. There are plentiful walks from the cottage’s doorstep, so you can easily make the most of the surrounding countryside! The front half of was built in the 18th century and extended in 2003, and this is reflected in its quirky layout. The conservatory and garden extend the space further and the private off-street parking and fully enclosed yard is a bonus, making it suitable for children and dogs.
Appleby prides itself as the County Town of Westmorland and is famous for its horse fair in early June. It is an attractive and interesting market town encircled by the River Eden, making it an ideal defensive location for the impressive Norman castle, which is open to the public. If you’re lucky, you may see red squirrels, otters and kingfishers along the riverside. Appleby boasts its own stop on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway with steam trains passing through regularly during the summer.
If you want to explore further afield, the iconic High Cup Nick and Cross Fell, the highest point in the Pennines at 893m can be accessed from the Pennine Way, a 10-minute drive away in Dufton. The Lakes and Dales Loop cycle route is virtually on the doorstep and there are numerous quiet country lanes on which to cycle and enjoy this quieter, relaxed part of Cumbria.
Entry to the cottage is from Colby Lane via a small vestibule and into the kitchen diner. The kitchen is a good size with pine furnishings providing a traditional feel. The kitchen contains an electric oven, electric and gas hobs, a microwave, dishwasher and fridge and is well stocked with cutlery, crockery and cooking equipment. The freezer and washing machine are located in the utility room. A dining table to seat six people makes for a pleasant social area.
Up seven stairs is the good sized living room, a cosy space containing a large two-seater sofa bed, a luxurious day bed, gas 'log' fire and basic Sky TV and DVD player. The WC and utility room are accessed off the living room.
Up another small set of stairs is the double bedroom. This is a really cosy room with an en-suite bathroom containing a walk in shower and WC, but taller guests should watch out for those low ceiling beams! Ample storage is available in the built in wardrobe and chest of drawers.
The conservatory is appended to the living room and contains a two seater wicker sofa and matching wicker chair. It opens on to a decked and paved patio and gravelled yard, in which there is a garden table, four chairs and parasol. A lockable shed is available in which to store bikes and a BBQ is also provided. The yard is fully enclosed, making it suitable for children. Half of the yard is available for parking up to two cars.
