We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely little house. We were slightly concerned before arriving at some negative comments about smelling of damp - we never once experienced this. There were a few minor issues, and we were very impressed how quickly the owners dealt with them. We have passed on some feedback to the owners regarding the hob and the fridge (the hob has no indication on it as to which hot plate is heated by which dial and the fridge door was not closing completely due to its wooden panel covering it). These are minor issues and from our experience we are sure the owners will rectify these small issues without delay.

I really appreciated the little touches -there were beautiful flowers at the kitchen window when we arrived, and the kitchen was stocked with useful things that one might forget to pack - washing up liquid, salt pepper, silver foil etc...

Location was amazing. The views were gorgeous. The cottage was very very dated and smelt of dogs and damp. The beck was amazing at the bottom of the garden but the garden needed more maintenance. Overall we wouldn’t use the cottage again but the location was exactly right.

Had a lovely relaxing week at Comb Beck. The cottage location is VERY peaceful, right by Whinlatter Forest, so great for morning and evening dog walks right on doorstep (as well as walking in general). The lounge is comfortable (with a small dinning table too) and the balcony over the stream is sunny and relaxing - though some cushions for the outside chairs would be a nice touch!

The elements that we scored low(er) in our review are more personal preference than problems with the property itself...

- Thornthwaite has no 'Local Amenities' - hence the 'low' score but Braithwaite is a pleasant 30 mins woodland walk (or 5 min drive) to the pub and small local shop. We came fully prepared to self-cater and expected to use the car to get to day-out activities/walks etc anyway, so this was not an issue for us.

The layout of the cottage is a little odd. The bathroom is reached through the kitchen at the lowest level - not ideal when going to the loo in the middle of the night and not wanting to wake/excite our dog sleeping in the lounge (mid-level), and not ideal going down the steep/turning stair case in the middle of the night in any case. The loft/reading room above the bedrooms is a nice space, but was completely lost on anyone like us with a dog - if you are to avoid letting the dog 'upstairs' (per owner's request) which we did, as we also do not allow our dog upstairs at home.

The kitchen is a little 'cosy' for those wanting to mostly self-cater - and the fridge (with "freezer compartment") is also too small if you turn up with a week's fresh food! Better to shop every 2/3 days. The electric hob is an old steel hot-plates (4) thing which is completely impractical/uncontrollable for doing anything more subtle than boiling pans of water - and the plate/bezel around the hot-plates also go VERY hot, and even the worktop started to warm up - which was a little concerning.....

The mattress in the double room needs replacing and would also benefit from some better quality pillows. Don't know about the single beds/bedding as we used that room to keep our clothes etc.

So overall, we would recommend this property, even though there are some small issues that could do with attention, as well as some quirks (layout) that you only 'experience' after the fact.
