From the North and South

  • Leave the M6 at junction 40 (Penrith)
  • Take the A66 westbound, signed for Keswick/Workington
  • Follow the A66 for about 19 miles till you have gone past Keswick
  • Continue for a further 4.5 miles, ignoring the first two left hand turns for Thornthwaite
  • Take the third left hand turn off for Thornthwaite
  • Follow this road for a mile or so until you come to a big white building called ‘The Swan’ (it used to be a pub but is now apartments)
  • Opposite the Swan is a track that is a public footpath towards the Bishop of Barf.  It doesn't look at first sight as though you can drive up it but you can.  
  • Go past Barf Cottage on your left and Seat Howe and The Coach House are on your right after that (they're the only house on the right so you can't miss it).  
  • Drive up a short steep entrance and the Coach House is on your right with the main house where Dorothy, the owner, lives right ahead of you.
