With footpaths within close walking distance leading up into the fells and mountains and down to the lake, this delightful cottage is ideal for walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Situated in the Wasdale valley on the quieter side of the Lake District, this cottage is part of a traditional working Lakeland farm with connections to famous fell runner, Joss Naylor. With views overlooking Wastwater Lake and the surrounding fells, this holiday cottage is perfect for walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering basic, cosy accommodation for up to six people.

Wasdale itself is a valley of extremes. It boasts England's deepest lake (Wastwater), highest mountain (Scafell), smallest church (St Olaf's) and the world’s biggest liar competition (each November in the local inn). It is the birthplace of British climbing, with excellent climbs of all grades, and a playground for local diving clubs. Local rumour has it that each club has a collection of gnomes on the lake bed, one of whom has a noose around his neck as a result of club rivalry.

For more gentle exercise, there are hundreds of walks within close walking distance of the door of the holiday cottage. Wastwater Lake is 5 minutes away, or you can go high up on the fells and mountains. There are many good swimming and picnic spots on the shores of the lake.

There are three pubs in the valley - one at the top of the lake (2 miles), and the other two (3 miles) face each other on the way to Gosforth village, where you will find shops selling groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers.

Eskdale is another lovely valley, only 15 minutes' drive away, with hundreds of river and mountain walks. It also houses a terminus for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway - a popular miniature railway that travels 7 scenic miles to the coastal fishing village of Ravenglass. Muncaster Castle, Gardens and Owl Centre is also 15 minutes away and has lots going on all year round, especially for children.

Inside, the hallway leads to the kitchen, sitting room and bathroom. The kitchen is fully furnished with electric cooker and hob, microwave and plenty of storage space. There are laundry facilities at the farmhouse and the owner will launder your washing for you upon request.

The bathroom is downstairs with electric shower, toilet and sink. Towels are provided.

You will find a comfy sofa and seating in the sitting room and a multi-fuel stove which warms the living room nicely and also heats the radiators in the rest of the house. The stairs lead from the sitting room to three bedrooms upstairs. One double, one twin and one triple bedroom.

Outside there is the use of a garden which overlooks Wastwater Lake. Please note that the garden is shared with the farmhouse.

Brilliant location for climbing Scafell Pike. Lambs had just started to be born while we were there, so that was extra special. There was a welcoming fire in the wood burner when we arrived.. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms lovely and warm. It was great having a glimpse of a working farm. Id love to go back.

Great property with lots of room, comfortable and a great getaway for a relaxing break - perfect spot for all the surrounding walks - enjoyed our stay and privacy in the cottage. Can recommend the Wasdale Inn/Ritsons Bar for food and drinks and a trip to Sawmill Coffee shop is a must. A unique and wondrous place to experience. Not many such in our country, I should think: it does not get better than this if you want to spend time deep in the hills and away from the crowds, gazing at the lake and the great Wasdale screes from inside the thick, stone walls of the cottage, willing (over breakfast and in your sights) the clouds to lRead moreift off the highest summits in the Lakes. Wonderful stay in an amazing location. We loved being on the working farm and close to the lake. We had some fantastic walks straight from the doorstep. Location was perfect, 2 miles from start of climb of Sca fell Pike. The owner was very helpful and kind. Perfect if you want to get away from modern tech (no TV, just dvd player and very limited slow wifi). Everything was as described but could do with updating some things. Peaceful and beautiful outlook over the lake.

The location of the cottage is amazing, though it's not mentioned that the entrance in the cottage is very awkward at the back of the farm and the garden isn't really a garden for use, the bathroom needs a refurbishment as it was looking outdated, moldy and not clean. Lovely cottage in great location. You can leave the fast pace of life behind you. We loved seeing the sheep and sheep dogs doing their thing and the chickens wondering around. Fantastic views and lots to see and do. Even enjoyed the one day of rain as the waterfalls and cascades were a treat to see.

Lovely place. A view over Wastwater, Wasdale Inn in walking distance (2 miles), Yewbarrow literally just above the cottage. Definitely a working farm - not a 'twee picture' farmyard but the real thing complete with an amazing variety of hens, collies, and sheep. Going to Ambleside (via Hardknott and Wrynose) - only for the brave!
