A Sunny Walk to Castlerigg

Here is a lovely little walk from Keswick that is perfect for all members of the family, and a great way to see the beautiful fells around Keswick and beyond, without having to climb them!

Set out from Keswick town to Springs Farm at the end of Springs Road. You can call in for a cuppa at Annie’s Pantry, maybe buy supplies for the walk, or make a note to call in on your way back for some of their beautiful home made cake or icecream.

There is a gentle climb uphill through the woods, bearing right at the sign for the stone circle. Soon you will be treated to one of my favourite picture perfect views of Derwentwater. Carry on till you cross a little bridge and go through the gate and bear left, then almost immediately right though another gate. There is a big field on your right, and the high wall of the campsite to your left. Now that you are out of the woods you can enjoy the gorgeous view of Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Helvellyn range and the Derwentwater fells. Simply beautiful!

The path turns left and through two pretty meadows. There is one busy road to cross and then the walk continues along a farm lane directly opposite, until you reach steps in a dry stone wall over to the Castlerigg stone circles. Don’t worry if you can’t manage the steps carry on to the end of the lane and turn right where you will find a gate.

Castlerigg is simply breath-taking, a perfect spot for a picnic! To get back to the start you can reverse your steps and enjoy the views in a different direction, or just turn left out of the gate on the field and walk all the way down the hill to Keswick.

This walk is suitable for all ages and fitness abilities and perfect if you're staying at one of our Keswick Cottages.
