We have been very busy recently preparing our new brochure ready for printing. You can register on our website or by telephoning us with your details and will receive a copy in December. In the run up to publishing, I have been preparing several new cottages for the website and writing up a guide to the Eden Valley.
I am lucky enough to live in Keswick, right in the heart of some spectacular scenery and close to some great pubs and shops. However the more I have written about the Eden Valley, the more I have realised what a fantastic hidden gem this area is, and maybe I should spend some more time exploring it.
Here is my pick of the best, perhaps you can add something to your itinerary on your next trip to our of our Lake District cottages.
The village of Greystoke has an open air heated swimming pool open April till September and a lovely quiet forest perfect for family cycling on the safe forest tracks. There is a great local pub with a vibrant music scene. If you enjoy live music in an atmospheric setting then make sure you include the Boot & Shoe on your itinerary.
Hutton in the Forest is a country house reflecting centuries of history and change with six periods of architecture between the 14th and 19th centuries. Take a tour of the stunning house and wander around the gardens and grounds at your own pace. The gardens are beautifully designed and the woodland walk is a fragrant delight in the spring, if you like wild garlic!
Walking in the Eden Valley is simply superb. It might not offer the towering ridges and rocky summits of the Lake District but it does offer wild unfrequented fells in abundance. Expect rolling grassy fells where you can stride out for miles and not see a soul. Good navigational skills are essential here, but there are some easier routes over tops like Melmerbey Fell and Cross Fell, which have clear paths and features.
Foodies will love the Eden Valley and it's abundance of food producers. There is an amazing artisan bakery at Melmerby, a charming cheese shop in Kirkby Lonsdale and not forgetting Cranstons, purveyors and meats and savoury goods. Their Cumberland Sausages and pork pies are simply sublime!
If this has piqued your interest in the Eden Valley, you can read more about it here on our area guide. Our selection of self catering cottages in the Eden Valley is expanding and we will be adding several character cottages in the coming weeks.
