Not long after I had listened to a news report about ice rink closures in the UK, I picked up the local Cumbria newspaper. The headline? A brand new ice rink is opening in Carlisle! Not only is it definitely going ahead, but it will be open within weeks, in time for Easter. What great news for local folk and holidaymakers in our self catering Lake District cottages.
The intended location in one of the city’s main parks in the shadow of Carlisle Castle and it will be accessible for many of our holidaymakers in our self catering Lake District cottages. Carlisle is Cumbria’s border city and has a fascinating history. It is as enjoyable for a day out round the shops as it is for a day exploring the castle, cathedral and Tullie House museum. The city is within a 40 minute drive of places like Cockermouth and Keswick.
The portable, synthetic surface will be on one of the disused tennis courts and can cater for over 70 people at one time. Costs are expected to be £3.50 plus £1.50 for skate hire for a child, and £5 plus £1.50 skate hire for an adult.
Along with the new ice rink, building work has started on a new high ropes adventure course and 70 metre zip wire.
