May 2013 Short Breaks

We have a wide selection of cottages in the Lake District of all shapes and sizes available for a short break from this Monday. The mountain weather forecast is looking positive for the week ahead, with generally dry weather forecast and just the odd blustery patch expected.

You can see the full availability list for a short break by clicking here, however, here is my pick of the best for the coming week:

Chestnut Cottage overlooks the village green in Stainton, about a 5 minute drive from the head of Ullswater. The immediate area is a hotbed for real ale pubs, most of which are within easy distance for a leisurely circular walk. Try the Horse and Farrier, an 18th Century Inn in Dacre, the Queens Head in Tirril with it’s own onsite brewery and the Gate Inn, an atmospheric gastro-pub at Yanwarth.

Walker’s Retreat in Keswick has the rare benefit of a dedicated parking space and is within easy walking distance of all the major Keswick attractions. The quiet courtyard location is suitable for up to 3 people and short breaks are available all year round.

Briscoe Mill benefits from fishing rights to the River Ehen, which meanders through the garden and alongside the cottage. Longlands Lake is a mile away and is well stocked for fishing. Briscoe Mill lies at the foot of the Ennerdale Fells, perhaps the least frequented of all with miles of grassy hill tops to choose from.

Wasdale View is a characterful dog friendly cottage, ideal for a growing family, with a double, twin and two single bedrooms. It is within easy reach of fell walking in Wasdale and Eskdale, and the Santon Bridge Inn is just ten minutes down the road.

Key How is a traditional dog friendly cottage right in the heart of Eskdale. The Bowerhouse Inn is just a few minutes walk, the River Mite runs along the side of the terrace, Muncaster Fell and the Ratty just across the fields. What more could you ask for!

Rowanburn Lodge is a cosy lodge residing at the regally names Dukes Meadow, on the edge of Greystoke Forest. The lodge is surrounded by decking, just the ticket for enjoying a meal outside. The lodge overlooks the duck pond, enjoying the peace and quiet, and there are frequent visits from the varied wildlife in the area.

Eagle Cottage nestles above Glenridding, with a lovely garden overlooking Ullswater. The cottage is perfect for an active family and is handily located for tackling Helvellyn and St Sunday Crag. Despite the secluded position, Eagle Cottage also has wifi!

Spring Bank is a large traditional house is on the edge of the quiet Dunnerdale Fells and within easy reach of Black Coombe. The fell roads around here are a cyclists dream - the circular route from Duddon Bridge into Eskdale, returning over Birker Fell is free from heavy traffic and has views for miles.

You can enjoy the best of both worlds at Garden Cottage with exhilarating mountain biking on the doorstep, secure bike storage and a handy utility room for muddy outdoor wear. The cottage itself is a large luxurious house benefiting from beautiful grounds and a stylish interior.
