Popular Cockermouth café Merienda has expanded and opened a branch in Keswick, in addition to its already established branch in Carlisle. All three branches are close to our Lake District cottages, whether you are staying in the west of the region, the Eden Valley or in the Keswick area.
Merienda is a modern, relaxed café bar serving simple food with a twist, with all the food sourced locally. The long established café on Station Street in Cockermouth holds regular jazz and folk music evenings. There is a comfy sofa and piles of newspapers to leaf through – just perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon.
Over August Bank Holiday I popped in to see if the new Keswick branch lived up to the quality and consistency of the Cockermouth branch and I wasn’t disappointed. The café has a beautiful parquet floor and retro seating – chose from church benches to school style chairs.
The coffee is fabulous (I would go as far to say the best in Keswick) and a carafe of chilled water is placed on your table as a matter of course. I ordered the chocolate Guinness cake which is absolutely divine.
The menu is produced using over 15 local suppliers and growers. The food is not fussy or contrived, just delicious and wholesome and served in a lovely atmosphere.
Cockermouth has a long establish café culture so it is lovely to see one of their nicest cafes branching out to bring their scrumptious wares to another part of Cumbria.
