The Lake District's events calendar is full of festivals, shows and gatherings, from traditional Lakeland farming events to weekends for lovers of good food and music. It's the New Year, so time to grab your brand new diary and pen and make a note of those dates you just can't afford to miss! Here are 15 we've picked out for you!
1. Words by the Water Festival, Keswick, 3rd-12th March 2017
Words by the Water is an inspirational 10-day festival of words and ideas for those with curious minds! Taking place at The Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, speakers include well-known names from the worlds of broadcasting, writing, and politics, with multi-day and single-day passes available, as well as single tickets, too.

2. The World's Original Marmalade Festival, Dalemain and Penrith Town Centre, 18th and 19th March 2017
This fun and unusual event has grown and grown in popularity over recent years, with award categories for the Marmalade Awards ranging from 'Children's Marmalade' to 'Merry' (with alcohol), and 'Any Citrus'! Displays and tastings are held at Dalemain, a gorgeous Georgian stately home near Ullswater, with an orange festival taking place in the historic town of Penrith!

3. The 26th Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival, 11th-14th May 2017
The Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival takes place across numerous venues around Keswick, and this year features music from the very first days of jazz. You can pick your favourite jazz styles and locations with a three- or four-day stroller ticket, but remember to book online in advance!

4. Taste Cumbria Ulverston, 27th and 28th May 2017
The Ulverston Taste Cumbria Festival takes place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, with around 60 local food and drink producers offering tempting tasters and selling an assortment of treats. There will be activities for children and live cooking demonstrations to inspire you in the kitchen at home!

5. Country Fest, Crooklands, near Kendal, 3rd and 4th June 2017
A celebration of the countryside, Country Fest is the perfect family day out, with animals, country activities, demonstrations, local producers, and much more.

6. Keswick Mountain Festival, 8th-11th June 2017
The Keswick Mountain Festival is the home of world class sporting events including trail running, triathlons, open water swimming, and cycling. There are plenty of other festival experiences on offer as well, including outdoor activity taster sessions, talks by inspirational speakers, and live music.

7. The Cumberland Show, Carlisle, 17th June 2017
Now in its 179th year, the Cumberland Show celebrates both traditional agriculture and modern farming, food, and the countryside. As well as livestock, show jumping, and horse driving competitions, you can also look forward to the vintage vehicle classes and a fun dog show! A variety of rural craft, food, and trade stands and live entertainment complete a really great day out.

8. Woolfest, Cockermouth, 23rd and 24th June 2017
This British wool festival celebrates the very best of wool and traditional woollen crafts. Meet the sheep breeds, visit exhibitions and demonstrations, talk to stall holders, take part in workshops, and bring away your very own woollen keepsake!

9. The Penrith Show, 22nd July 2017
First held in 1834, the Penrith Show features competition classes for farm livestock, arable, horses, rabbits, poultry and, show jumping - so there's lots to see! Families will also enjoy watching the entertainment and attractions in the main ring and a look round the local trade stands, food hall, and rural crafts marquee.

10. Pot Fest in the Park, near Penrith, 28th-30th July 2017
Set in the fabulous grounds of historic Hutton-in-the-Forest, Pot Fest features over 100 exhibitors of beautiful clay crafts from Europe and beyond.

11. The Cumbria Steam Gathering, Flookburgh, 29th and 30th July 2017
Organised by the Cumbria Steam and Vintage Vehicle Society at Cark Airfield, Flookburgh, the Cumbria Steam Gathering attracts impressive displays of steam engines, vintage vehicles, farm equipment, and classic cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. There's something for all the family with lots of stalls and food, daredevil entertainment, and even an old-fashioned fairground!

11. The Lowther Show, 12th and 13th August 2017
An extravaganza of everything country sports, the Lowther Show takes place in the grounds of Lowther Castle and features the Lowther Horse Driving Trials, Lowther Fishing Island, and Lowther Hound Show. You'll also find a huge assortment of trade stands, demonstrations, try-it-yourself country sports, and a food and beer festival, so there really is something for everyone!

12. The Westmorland County Show, 14th September 2017
One of the last major country events of the year in the South Lakes, the Westmorland County Show is fantastic fun for all the family. As well as the show animals and entertainment, you can expect trade stands, exhibition marquees, rural crafts, great food from local producers, and much more.

13. The Eskdale Show, September, date to be confirmed
A traditional country show, and the oldest show for Herdwicks, the Eskdale Show takes place against the sight of the beautiful Eskdale Fells, and features competitions for Herdwick sheep, foxhounds and terriers, as well as hound trails, where trail hounds chase a scent trail of aniseed around the surrounding fells.

14. Kendal Mountain Festival, 16th-19th November 2017
The UK's premier mountain film festival, the Kendal Mountain Festival brings together outdoor enthusiasts and professional explorers for four days of celebration in November. Over 100 films are shown as part of the International Film Competition, with premieres from around the world, and other highlights include art and photography exhibitions, book events, a programme of lectures from inspirational speakers, specialist sessions, workshops, and competitions.
