Lake District Events This Weekend

Published:

If any of you are coming to stay at our Lake District Cottages this weekend, you might be interested in taking part in one of the following events:

Cumbria Fishing Festival takes place at various Lake District spots with around 50 different events from Master class sessions on Salmon and trout river fishing to learning the latest techniques for stillwaters.  This festival promises something for everyone, from beginners to experts.  Contact Neil Birkinshaw on 015395 35630 for further information.

From Auschwitz to Ambleside Exhibition has been extended indefinitely and is held in the Windermere library at Windermere (open 10am to 1pm on Saturdays, 9.30am to 5pm weekdays (excluding Wed).  This is an exhibition of photographs and information about Jewish child refugees arriving to Ambleside having survived the Holocaust – a story recently featured in a BBC documentary: “The Orphans Who Survived The Concentration Camps”. Call Windermere Library on 01539 462 400.

Keswick Jazz Festival takes place from Thursday 12 May to Sunday 15 May at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, as well as 13 other venues in and around Keswick.  In total there will be around 100 jazz events taking place over four days.

At Hesket Newmarket there is a guided circular walk taking place on Tuesday May 17 at 10.30am from the Hesket Newmarket car park. A National Park Ranger will take you from Hesket Newmarket, along the River Caldew and the Cald Beck to Caldbeck village.  Hesket Newmarket and Caldbeck Village are both pretty villages on the fringe of the Lake District, just 30 minutes from our Keswick Cottages or Ullswater Cottages.

Hutton in the Forest is hosting a Plant & Food Fair on Sunday May 15.  This stately home is just a 20 minute drive from our Ullswater cottages, or 30 minutes if you are staying in one of our Keswick cottages.

On Saturday May 14 is a Wresting Showdown held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston.  I have no idea what this is but it sounds great – I couldn’t resist including it.  Call 01229 588 994 for further information.  Admission is £10.  Ulverston is about 20 minutes from our Coniston cottages, or 40 minutes if you are staying in Eskdale or Ravenglass.

Brockhole in Windermere (South Lake District) is hosting a few events on Sunday.  You can enjoy Summer Sunday Music on the Terrace – classical music in beautiful surroundings from 2pm (free entry), or you can join the Lake District National Park volunteers in the bird hide from 11am.  They will help you identify the birds and animals in the surrounding woodland and there is no charge.  If you are staying in one of our Keswick cottages, it will take you about 35 minutes to get here.

The RSPB is holding one of its Bird Cruises on Ullswater Steamers on Saturday (10.30am to 3.30pm).  The steamers take you down Ullswater Lake to Howtown where there is a guided walk around Hallin Fell to explore the rich biodiversity of Hallinhag Wood.  An ideal event if you are staying in one of our Ullswater cottages, or just 30 minutes drive if you are staying in our Keswick cottages.

Rheged is opening a new gallery this weekend which will showcase the best nature photography you can find with its Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition.  The competition was held in October 2010 at the Natural History Museum and the exhibition is open from 11am at Rheged (price £2, children free).  Just 20 minutes drive if you are staying in our Keswick cottages, or nearer if you are staying at Ullswater.

Finally, on Sunday from 10am, Dalemain Historic House is hosting a Pack & Tracks Countryside Event which celebrates the role of the horse in the Lake District’s heritage.  Displays, stands, stalls and arena events will make this a full day out.  Again, this is a 30 minute drive from our Keswick cottages, or 15 minutes from our Ullswater cottages.

Not quite this weekend, but don’t forget the Keswick Mountain Festival which takes place from Wednesday May 18th to Sunday May 22nd.
